Well, when your children are forced to go to a government controlled school, and fed governments lies, all while you are being told you have no choice in the matter, I would say that is a pretty big reason to request asylum.
At least this family is trying to do things the right way in their journey to this country. Last I checked, most of the folks here are not 'Native American' - myself included. We are the melting pot of mostly outcasts who wanted a better life. My only issue with the current situation from south of the border is that they came here illegally, and we are going to reward them by letting them stay.
As for Germany, Google is your friend:
At 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013, in what has been called a “brutal and vicious act,” a team of 20 social workers, police officers, and special agents stormed a homeschooling family’s residence near Darmstadt, Germany, forcibly removing all four of the family’s children (ages 7-14). The sole grounds for removal were that the parents, Dirk and Petra Wunderlich, continued to homeschool their children in defiance of a German ban on home education.

For one whole year Thomas and Marit foam are to go behind bars Because They Are not willing to entrust Their children to a public school. The state's attempt to force the couple from Northern Hessia by maximum punishment to act against Their deep convictions bears totalitarian traits. The case will be heard at the regional court of Kassel on October 16, 2013.

One of the recommendations from the UN Human Rights Councils Special Report on Germany:
......That the necessary measures should be adopted to ensure that the home
schooling system is properly supervised by the State, thereby upholding the right of
parents to employ this form of education when necessary and appropriate, bearing in mind
the best interests of the child;

One of the current cases in Germany:
....The applicants belong to a Christian community which is strongly
attached to the Bible and reject the attendance of private or State schools for
religious reasons. The applicant parents find that school education does not
suit their beliefs because of sex education, the appearance of mythical
creatures such as witches and dwarfs in fairytales during school lessons and
the increasing physical and psychological violence between pupils at school.
