The country would probably be better off with NO medical insurance. If you really need to go to the doctor, pay for it and that goes for the millions of freeloaders who've helped cause this mess. Market forces would kick in to drop the cost of health care if the insurance companies weren't there to pay the ridiculous costs. If individual Americans refuse to pay $10 for a bandaid (that's about what the hospitals bill insurance companies), either they would charge 50 cents for it or go out of business.

High deductible insurance would help. The ultimate consumer only pays 13 cents out of every dollar of health care consumed. Indirectly the consumer pays more but why not have the consumer shoulder more of the burden directly to encourage responsible behavior.

That is the best way to go. Individuals can buy a tailored policy to protect them from a financial crisis or assist with a child birth. Any visits to the doc, medicine, etc. should be paid out of a tax deductible health account. By getting rid of employer healthcare, workers could negotiate more pay and tailor their health insurance the way it benefits them or their family the best. Healthcare should be similar to auto insurance. You have it but you hope to never use it.
