I disagree. Why cheapen the regular season?

If you have a 4 team playoff, teams #5 & #6 while cry about not making it. If you have an 8 team playoff, teams #9 & #10 will cry.

They are now looking at possibly going to 96, yes, 96(!!) teams in the NCAA basketball tourney!

Cheapen the regular season? A playoff system would make the regular season that much more exciting. Every other major sport at all levels have playoff systems, it allows for true champions to be crowned.

I guess you missed the Colts quiting during the Jets (regular season) because the game meant NOTHING. I guess you like teams getting in the NCAA basketball tourney at 15-15 because they managed to win their conference tourney?

A play-off will NOT settle teams crying about not having a shot at the championship. It will just cause teams with 9-3 (or 7-5) records crying about not having a shot.

NCAA football is not NFL, no reason to try top mimick them. I MUCH prefer the college game.

NCAA Division I-AA football has playoffs, NCAA Division II football, NCAA Division III football, NAIA football, NCAA Division I baseball, Division I-AA baseball, Division II baseball, Division III baseball, NAIA baseball, all divisions of college basketball, all divisions of college hockey, all divisions of college soccer, all divisions of college lacross, all high school sports and any other sport at any level has playoffs. I really hate to agree with kperk about anything, but the only reason there is no playoff system in the FBS is money. Plain and simple.
I say put all 6 BCS conference champions in a bracket, add two wild-card teams to make 8, and let them have at it. The wild-card teams could be picked out of the mid-major conference champions with, say, the highest AP ranking.

So, you would have:

SEC champ
ACC champ
Big East Champ
Big 10 Champ
Big-12 champ
PAC-10 champ
Boise St. (who goes undefeated every other year)
One other mid-major conference champ

This set-up eliminates most of the complaints people have about a play-off.

First, it doesn't cheapen the regular season because in order to win the conference, typically the record has to be near perfect.

Second, each team in the bracket earned it on the field (there are no favorites or media darlings).

Third, an 8 team bracket would not lengthen the season to an absurdly long duration like a 16 or 24 team bracket would.

Fourth, there would be no "paradoxes" like we saw with Oklahoma in (2002 or 03) when they went to the National Championship game but did NOT even win the Big-12!

Fifth, there would be no pointless bowl games between two 6-6 teams that no one cares about.

Sixth, there could still be a Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowl -- just hold each play-off game at one of the locations. You could even add more bowl games for teams that were good, but didn't win the conferences. This would still allow the "bowl money" to be awarded to a few schools that didn't make the play-offs.

But, why does the government have anything to do with this? Aren't, we the people, capable of doing anything on our own, anymore?

You're not smart enough, let the government do your thinking for you.
