When my ex used to make peanut butter and banana sandwiches, he would put a VERY thin layer of mayo on one slice of the bread and the peanut butter on the other. He said it made it "less sticky" and he was right. My Mom always put a tablespoon of mayo in her mashed potatoes and in her cornbread batter. She said it made the cornbread rise better. I do both of those myself and have gotten compliments on my mashed potatoes from others.

It's a bit off topic but my grandmother taught me to sew as well and I have her 1957 Singer which is still running like a top. Grandmother's are wonderful aren't they? Both of mine are gone now, too, but each loved imparting her particular knowledge to me to carry on.
...TDP, your sewing machine is a treasure! My 81 year old Mother use one that I think was called a trindle, not sure about the spelling, but anyway it was not electric and operated by the ladie's foot. I never knew either of my grandmothers. They both died when my parents were young children. I have regretted that all my life, and now I am a grandmother. I'm so happy to have my grandchildren! Hang on to that old Singer!! I know you will!!!!

Just, you are referring to a treadle machine. My grandmother had one of those prior to owning the machine I currently have but I never saw it. I wasn't born until 1965.
....haha oh me, TDB I was driving before you were born! I'm so glad you and Zip are moving back to the South!! Yes, you're right....it was a treadle. Thanks for some good memories!! Happy homecoming Y'ALL !!!

And, I'm happy to report, she actually uses it to fix things like trousers.

It's a darn good thing I do since someone I know and love tends to pop seams and zippers. BTW, remind me I have your latest pair to stitch up when I get home. Lately, I seem to suffer more and more from CRS disease (can't remember sh!!).

TDB - that sounds like a good meal! Now I'm craving salmon patties! Smiler

I guess unusual combinations are not so unusual in the south but when I've told others who weren't raised in the south, they turn their lip up and say yuck. Then again, some of their combos I find strange too. A big one up north is having pasta as an accompaniment to steak. We went out with some people when we lived near Chicago and I was shocked that I could not get a baked potato with my steak. They only offered pasta...not even a salad either!!! I had to say yuck to that.

But getting back on topic, has anyone out there ever eaten the following together:

breaded and fried salmon patties, collard or turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread? That meal was also a family favorite when I was growing up, especially when greens were in season.

I had that once; fed it to the dog. She spent the rest of the night licking her butt to get the taste out of her mouth.

I seem to recall that night much differently. I remember you ate it with a smile, cleaned your plate and NEVER mentioned until years later that you didn't like the meal. Sometimes I harken back with fondness to those early days when you were afraid to tell me you didn't like my cooking. Big Grin

When I gave birth to my daughter (3 months premature) I was sent by ambulance from ECM to Huntsville Hospital. Before leaving ECM, they fed me lunch... baked ham, turnip greens and mac and cheese. I don't like turnip greens, but ate them because I was starving by that time. About 2 minutes from Huntsville Hospital I discovered turnip greens taste just as bad coming back up as they do when you first eat them. Frowner

How do you prepare yours? Do you use the canned salmon? My grandmother breaded hers with cornmeal but my mother crushes saltines to bread the salmon with after dipping it in egg. I always preferred the crushed saltines.
are you all ready for these:

Tomatoes, sausage gravy salt, and pepper--absolutely love it.

Banana sandwich with mayo(Bama)

Hubby is from South Alabama, what i call the swamp, he eats rice with anything he eats.

mayo and french fries--Great

ranch dressing with french fries, pizza, taco salad, spaghetti, pot roast, baby cut carrots sprinkled with salt

grilled cheese and chili

cauliflower and ranch dressing

onions, cucumbers, tomatoes mixed in with italian dressing.

I have never done it, but uncle did.
Another thing that seems strange to me is to put ketchup on all kinds of meat, bbq chicken, steak and porkchops. Why would you if they are grilled. Then there is mayonaise on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, strange combination.

Waaaaaay back when I was a kid, Mom used to fix PB&J sandwiches to carry in my lunch box. She put margerine on the jelly side to keep the jelly from getting the bread soggy. It worked!

My family always used flour to bread the patties. We'd mix the flour in with the salmon and then fry it.
