I can honestly say that this is the best local news of the year.

Sam has been a thorn in the side of this city for years and years.  And, his lack of compromise and general stubborn personality has run many other city councilmen out of politics.

Public service is not worth having to face a Sam Pendleton every council meeting.

Surely West Florence can come up with a reasonable, quality person to take his place.

Sam did some things that I agreed with like standing up against the other 3 towns such as the hospital and other things. But then he did many things that I felt like made Florence look bad.  At the moment I don't think it is proper or correct for a sitting councilman to be endorseing singleton for mayor.  It looks like a conflict of interest when he starts using his position to say one person is bad and another is good. Just my view.

Contrary to the Mike Goens piece in today's paper, Pendleton is not all that astute with regard to matters of parliamentary procedure.  His continual demands that he be afforded his "freedom of speech" are pretty silly, since the Clowncil meetings are governed by Robert's Rules of Order, and those rules necessarily limit  when and to what purpose a participating member can offer comment.  Pendleton would like to assert himself just about anywhere in the proceedings, and he should be called out of order when he butts in inappropriately, but often he is allowed to get away with it.

His chameleon-like behavior has been a major element of his Clowncil performance.  He was doing the flip-flopping, Etch-a-Sketch thing long before Mitt Romney got accused of it.  A mayor serving contemporaneously with Pendleton should not take comfort in Pendleton's support on any significant issue, since that support often migrates to the other side  before long.

I have to give Mr. Pendleton his props.  Before he came to the council, the budget process was a secret process without much information seeing the light of day.  He had the budgeting brought out in the public at the council meetings and information made available.  You might not like the way Mr Pendleton grandstands sometimes, but you need someone like him on the council to keep the other's scared so they won't steal and allow creeping corruption and over spending on city employees and department projects.  Oscar Ray Peeden served the same purpose on the commission back in the 70s.  True Mr. Pendleton supported too much spending at times.  He believes the city is an employment service.  He was against making cuts to employees during some times the city needed to reduce the number of employees,  they still need to cut back.  But the very act of making decisions public and debating the issues led to better government.  I and the city will miss Councilman Pendleton and I thank him for his service to his community and the city.

I suspect that Sam would not appreciate any suggestion that he belongs in the company of the regrettable Wacko of Wasilla!

Pendleton should have been gone long, long ago when the news erupted about his little inappropriate "gift" to a teenager. Anyone else would have been run out of office on rails. There was some baby in the bathwater but it was mostly *****-filled bathwater. There are some who fear we could do worse. I do not see how hat is possible. Good riddance, Pendleton.
