I understand the need for fast police cars to respond to emergency situations. Why do civilian cars need to be just as fast? Why not govern them, civilian cars, to the maximum speed limit in the state they are sold. This would eliminate the high speed police chases on TV, reduce danger to the public at large and the police,(more officers are killed due to car crashes than being shot) save fossil fuels, improve gas mileage and probably cut down on the cost of new cars.

Didn't they try something similar with a 55 mph limit? And, I guess there are places people need to get to faster, emergency and non-emergency both. To wander off the subject a bit, please forgive me, when I was young I read a story that said in the future (now) cars, among having other safety advances, would be made of materials that would basically disintegrate when they hit each other or other obstacles, and there would be almost no fatalities in accidents. There would be almost no DUIs because people would have to key in a code to get the car started, and if very drunk/high/impaired not many would be able to do that. Yeah, how did all that work out.

Because the speed limit in different states varies and it is possible that a person may have occasion to actually leave the protected little world they live in and venture to a different state.
Speed limits in Texas can go as high as 85 , and I think there are some highways out West that still have a "safe driving speed limit"  aka drive as fast as you think is safe. Someone buying a car in say Alaska or DC where the max speed limit is still 55 could be a danger on a Texas or even an Alabama highway.
Much better option would be a mandated electronic device that would disable texting while a car is moving. Much better even than some type of DUI device.

Second, the high speed police chase is probably not warrented in most cases .

Limit my 490hp classic car to 55 now that is just crazy!!!

With the advent of 4 lane highways everywhere now, the need for a lot of hp jusst isn't as necessary as it used to be, but all too many times I have been in some situation where in order to avoid some danger, I had to accellerate to 20 or 30 or maybe more MPH over the speed limit. It just ain't safe to not have access to that kind of speed.

Your man card is officially revoked any real man knows there is never too much HP for motorized vehicle of any kind.

Why do police even need fast cars. Look at Germany, Italy, England, Russia and more all use small cars about the size of a ford focus or impala with small engines. The era of big gas guzzling, high car repairs are over. The police car budget could maybe be cut in half along with the amount of gas being used. There is no need for every police officer to have a super  size super fast car. A few are needed, but does all the chiefs, all the sergeants, all the officers, all the desk police, all the police that rarely if ever make a arrest or patrol the streets need a big police car.. These are mainly used just for the police to go home and back to work everyday. Florence is small enough that back up can arrive in minutes. City leaders need to realize the era of big spending, spending when not necessary, with a lot of city employees having a taxpayers car is over.  A singe free use of a car to any city or county employee is like about a $8,000.00 pay increase a year.  I have no problem at all with the police who actually do the patrolling all day long taking a car home, they are underpaid anyway and they will be the ones called to come to work for an emergency.

While cruising down the autobahn a few years ago doing about 200 KPH, (about 100 MPH) I was stopped by the polizei.  Nice guys, they just wanted to warn of a tail light out. Paid a 10 mark fine on the spot.  Fixed the light at the next gas station.  I asked to look under the hood of their cruiser.  They were agreeable and told me about the lead weight.  Worth the small fine to see such sharp machine.

Nah, I've been 'assing' it up for years now.  Mrs. Grundy changed the filter back in '09 on account of the 'jawbone of an ass' thing in the religion forum.

Do we need the government to wipe our asses for us too?  Maybe dictate how we much toilet paper we use to prevent clogs?

I'm so tired of hearing 'if we could just save one life, isnt it worth it...'

Yep, radios travel at 186,000 MPS. Unless, your car has a flux capacitor, you aren't going to out run it.
