PUBLIX IS AN AWSOME PLACE TO SHOP. The only way to get rid of WALMART is for people to stop patronizing their stores. Which I did 7 years ago. You hear over and over how badly people hate shopping there, but the parking lots are always full.
unclegus:
Florence has all these small towns and the rapidly expanding Hispanic population, both of whom are not interested in spending their money on high end food products.
You got that right for sure.

I was told they were coming to florence ..the old navy building or toys r us ....that what Im hearing any way
I got an email last week from a person at their headqtrs...no plans for a Publix in Florence or near Shoals area
Based upon my experience Publix is a great place to shop. I only go in Wal-Mart when I am too lazy to drive somewhere further.
Publix seems to have products I want to buy, Wal-Mart has the cheapest products from Mexico and China which most people buy, and forces smaller competition out of business. When the competition is gone, you then just raise your prices on your cheap products.
Eventhough Sam is gone, if you knew the history behind how Wal-Mart was started, you would throw up. He had several smaller venture stores by another name, built up cash to invest in his new operation (Wal-Mart), bankrupted his smaller ventures, and began anew with Wal-Mart.
Before anyone tells me I don't know what I am talking about, I will tell you I have friends who's parents small supply business was bankrupted due to the debt owed them when Sam bankrupted his first venture.
It isn't that complicated to do: Partners A+B hire company C. B oversees finances yet over pays company C. Company C does wonderful while partner A+B go bankrupt. Company C now hires Partner B as President/CEO with lots of stock as a hiring bonus.
Happens every day somewhere.

Funny how WalMart puts the small business owner out of business while Sam's caters to the small business owner.
Sounds great. Let the wife shop in Publix and I'll save a table in Hooters.
Don't leave your wallet and coat at the table and go to the bar while you wait for her! LOL!
I talked to someone the other day who said publix had contacted them about buying their land in Florence. They are currently looking at two locations.
must be the old navy and toys r us I mentioned before...............
Nah there will be no Publix anytime soon
it is actually not the toys r us or old navy. I hear that a bed bath and beyond is going in the old navy building
I doubt that Publix will open anything in this area anytime soon but I do think they are looking at the area and will come in the future. As for talking to Publix they will never give out their plans or intentions until they have land purchased so that they can potentially get a better deal, or so I hear.
My sister-in-law's dad's girlfriend works at Publix--obviously a great place to work with excellent benefits. She is always singing their praises and telling us how great they treat their employees. Plus their deli selections are delish! She always brings us some of their mango key lime pies, key lime pies, and Mediterranean roasted chicken from their deli/bakery when they come for a visit.
Wish we would get some new places to grocery shop in the area!

Don't know if y'all saw the Sunday article in the Times Daily about potential growth in the area and mentioned that Publix will be making a decision about coming into the Florence area in the coming month/weeks. Two locations were mentioned in the Times Daily Article.
Location #1 - Old SteinMart store ( also old FoodMaxx) in K-Mart Shopping center
Location #2 - Darby Drive & Cox Creek rd.
Time will tell

LOL, beternU.
You know, I know Publix obviously has many fans among TD Forum members, but I don't get it. I've been in these stores while on vacation or business trips. They don't seem any different than other grocery stores to me.

_Joy_,
Publix has a great selection - much better than most stores - and takes competitor coupons and offers numerous specials. They would be GREAT to have in this area.

Oh and the samples are great too! Don't even get me started about the great deli meats & cheeses!!
Anything would be better than Wal-mart.
