School board member MaLeah Chaney, who represents the Weeden district, said she has received dozens of calls and e-mails from current and former residents and school alumni.

"I understand that there's a lot of history there," Chaney said, referring to the school that dates to 1919. It was named for John D. Weeden, the grandson of Alabama Gov. Robert M. Patton.

"But, I'd view it as an honor to have my school chosen for a new name. That said, there is work being done now to better the school, to make it more appealing to children. And while I'm keeping an open mind, right now (the board's) main focus is on selecting our new superintendent and continuing to build strong academic programs."

Well, Ms. Chaney, I will consider it an HONOR to change your name to FORMER BOARD MEMBER if I get the chance. Changing the name won't make it more "appealing to children" -- it will make it more "appealing to the politics" of Kendy Behrends.

VERY WELL SAID.

And I will consider it an honor to help Ms. Kendy Behrends move out of her office at the Richards Center. She has made a mockery of the school system long enough.
I agree with you folks I'm not from that area but had friends in high school and since from Weeden, it's amazing how some of these people in higher positions just don't get it! If anybody were to come out to Underwood wanting to mess with our school name we would feel the same way! These people that flit from place to place and job to job don't understand the attachment some of us have to community. If they feel like they have to change something change "Florence High School" to singing river, it's not been there long enough to upset many folks since most of the people that say they went to Florence would rather have been at Coffee or Bradshaw anyway! At least the ones I know have said that.
As in the life of politics a consensus should be taken from all sides who opposes and who is for it. I'm sure that when the time is right Ms Chaney will make the right decision. I have known Ms Chaney for quite sometime and her heart is for Weeden's best interest and district 3. You shouldn't condemn a person if you don't know them.
Didn't condemn her -- stated my opinion of her comments. There is a difference. If she continues on the path that Kendy is setting -- she will condemn herself. If she is truly the person you say she is and has a heart for Weeden -- then she saves herself the heartache. Sorry, you don't like my opinion, but I don't like the politics that continue to get shoved down our throats.
Did I touch a nerve Eastside? I respect your opinion about the name change of course and I agree. Ms Chaney will be like the other board members and will reserve their opinions and vote at the time it is taken. If I recall the comments it did not state either way and that she is keeping an open mind about the matter. That is why we as the public need to stay on this matter and keep in touch with our school officials and attend those meetings.
Look, ppl, TDFman is trying to say he knows they aren't going to change the name. Its over. Go on to other topics. If it should come back up, then waste your energy. Got it?

Actually why don't ya go by the school, legally, etc., and ask what they need if you want to help. Maybe they need a new sign or flower bed. Offer to help if its your neighborhood school. Heck, offer even if its not.
