It has become painfully obvious to me that people do not understand the laws when it comes to school buses stopping on the roadway. Most mornings when I am coming into work, I nearly have a wreck because someone on 72 west slams on their breaks for a school bus stopped on 72E. Citizens, you do not have to stop for a school bus on the opposite side of a divided highway.

You are correct, you do not have to stop on a divided hwy.
And obviously I meant brakes
I almost had a wreck because of this stupidity about a week ago traveling 72 hwy. I came within inches of hitting the idiot that had came to a complete stop over a hill near the polo fields. If both lanes had not stopped I could have just quickly took the other lane...but the driver in that lane had stopped too. I slid to a screeching stop and when we started moving again and I passed the one in the right lane, the man driving gave me the finger, as if I was the one not obeying the laws!
When did they change that law?
According to this link, 2006. Here is a good description of what is allowed and what isn't in PDF form. You will just need to enlarge it. But on the right is a breakdown on the situations and how drivers should proceed.
Thanks for that link. I was not aware that the law had been changed. The school bus stop laws differ from state to state. when I lived in Memphis, they did not allow children to cross traffic, so even on an undivided street, traffic in oncoming lanes did not have to stop. I believe in Mississippi, traffic in all lanes must stop unless they have changed it.
It would be a good idea to post road signs whether you need to stop or not.
maybe TD should do an article on this SUBJECT as it is reasonably IMPORTANT?
Not a bad idea at all, Ribbit.
Sheesh. You guys oughtta ride with me some morning...
I stop and hit my red lights at Veterans Dr. and Industry St. in Florence and 40 cars go whizzing by me in the opposite lanes (undivided highway). All of them either on the phone or in a trance. Couple of them usually wave. Some even use all their fingers.
Then there was the cop in the fancy new interceptor that flew by my stopped bus on MY side only inches away at I'm guessing close to 60 MPH one afternoon as kids were crossing. All I could do was lay on the horn.
Those same morons that DON'T stop for my loading lights are the ones that lock 'em up in ALL lanes when I stop with only my left turn signal on. (which must shock the hell outta 'em because apparently NOBODY uses those...."things" around here.)
G'wan. Take a trip with ol' Road Doggie.
You ain't seen motorized stupidity fo' realz til you've driven a bus route.
I gotta laugh at these idiots-cause if I stopped to really think about their antics-I'd be a wreck myself.
Close calls don't even begin to describe them.
Yes, ribbit. Nevermind the TD.
I think it should be a continuously run PSA on TV because some of these folks I bet can't read, but they can watch the heck outta Jerry.
I see the same thing from some of the nuts we have driving school buses around here. On the red lights at Dr. Hicks every morning I witness a driver who thinks that they not only own the road, that they also are driving a Formula 1 car. They whiz in and out of traffic and wait till the last minute to decide to change change lanes. One morning they did not even use a turn signal. So I guess there are idiots on both sides of the wheel.
