The so-called Shoals Patriots put an ad in Tuesday's paper urging defeat of the renewal of the 7-mill school tax supporting Florence and Lauderdale County public schools. The tax was approved by a vote of 4,459 to 1,935, a 2.3 to one WINNING margin!

Thanks to the real PATRIOTS who supported this funding for public education and a pox on the knee-jerk, against-all-taxes mentality of the pseudo-patriots who worked (unsuccessfully!) against it.

Taxes, like death, are the only two things in life you can be sure of. I think the problem for many of the opposition is the faxct that most taxes do not correlate into a net benefit for the intended party. I think that, until the state changes the way the education system receives their tax dollars, there is always going to be a problem to sufficiently fund the schools.

It is common practice to keep these re-votes as "quiet" as possible. That way, the "for" (school officials and employees) can turn out and vote without the dirty masses turning out and voting down school funding.

That being said, schools REQUIRE funding!

Perhaps keeping these "re-votes" quiet is a good thing, since if they became "noisy", the know-nothing, knee-jerk, anti-any-tax neanderthals would get out the vote and kill the tax and add more misery to public school funding in difficult times like these.

The real, long-term answer to Alabama's fiscal problems is to re-write the archaic Constitution of 1901 and to establish realistic property tax structures--especially for the monied elites who hold vast tracts of property and pay only a pittance in taxes. Big landowners wrote the old, out-of-date Constitution of 1901 and it has served their narrow interests too well for too long.

Perhaps, education should be market based instead of a bureaucratic mess. Then we wouldn't need taxation to cover "difficult times."
Love how betern nuttin wishes government to be out of sight of the citizens. No transparency for you.

For example, the city of Madison needs another high school because of the large population increase generated by BRAC.

They've voted on a half cent sales tax increase to pay for the school, until a property tax is voted on. I agree the school is needed and agree with the sales tax increase and the property tax increase. However, the sales tax increase as implemented does not have a sun set clause. The tax should end about 12 to 18 months after the property tax passes. Property tax revenue is always a year or so late, hence the extra time to collect sales tax.

I'm for the sunset clause and will vote that way given a chance. Or, vote out the persons who wwill not give a choice.

Yes... there it is the cry of the "BigGov Looney" bird... oppose any tax and you'll hear him squawk. More taxes equal more control, the bird never 'gets it'... yet, ironically, the bird often gets "the bird"...
Also, I remember when it was 'liberals' that were referred to as "knee-jerk"... Hmm... I guess conservatives had to become proactive in the face of the insidious onslaught of creeping communism.

My neanderthal net does not spread out that far.

But in these times of pro-ration and deep budget cuts in public school funding, anyone voting against renewal of this over 50-year-old school tax is very likely to have very heavy brow ridges and to communicate in gutteral grunts.
Despite old info, to the contrary neandertaler (new preferred spelling) had the small bones necessary for full speech and a large brain capacity.

He wasn't too quick on abstract thought like tossing a spear, rather than thrusing with one. Obviously, when encountering large dangerous game, throwing the spear is much safer. I assume neadertaler passed his genes on to the moonbats.

Preferred spelling? Maybe that is not a fully decided matter. Just as information, and not to argue the point:

Sorry if I offend you. I realize that spelling, punctuation, and grammar are not your strong points.

I'll take common sense and truth anyday over spelling, punctuation, and grammer.
