On the Muscle Shoals Reservation there is a place called the Rock Pile. It is where boats are launched, picnic tables set out for families to enjoy the senery and people camp out.
As you go into the area on the right is a rock cliff which is home to several cats that have dropped off by people who for whatever reason did not want to keep them anymore.

Since 1999, there are a group of people that feed, make beds, provide bedding and medical attention to this cats. These cats are feral but most are friendly as they are use to being fed, watered and petted every day. Over the years they have actually become an attraction for the kids and people to just come and watch them.

This morning one of the ladies had gone down to the rock facing to feed them. Laying on the ground were two of the cats.
One was a gray and white striped cat which was called "Momma Cat". Another was a small white cat, which had not been given a name, and was approximately 8 weeks old. Someone had dropped it off and being use to people was very friendly to anyone who came up.

It appeared both had come out to whomever had walked up to their sleeping area after 4:30PM yesterday. That individual or indivduals had picked them up, took them by the hind legs and slammed their head agains the face of the rock cliff, shattering their skull and spattering their brains.

When you see something like this, it underlines the saying I have said a few times on this forum...Just because they walk on two legs does not mean they are human and deserve to be treated as such.
In fact, there are some who walk on two legs that just need a bullet behind the ear...The world would be a whole lots better place and whom ever did this fits that description.

I have enjoyed these cats for years and I could feel the heat of rage rise up in my face as I read this...derranged loser.
This is really sad.It is hard for us animal lovers to understand what motivates this kind of cruelty.I have heard that this kind of behavior often is a red flag of a criminal nature. Next time, they may move on to humans. Let's really hope the video caught them!I agree, the TD should post name and photo on the front page for all to see!
If I remember correctly, the TD showed the person who cut the ears off of Taco the puppy (said person is currently, I believe, serving a five year sentence)on the front page. That person is safer in jail than he would have ever been on the streets after showing his face. Many people really wanted to get their hands on him. Hopefully they won't have a problem putting these jerks on the front page either. I DO wish they'd written about it. All the publicity the Taco story got helped find the perpetrator.
Feral cats (free-roaming cats living in the wild, not controlled by human owners) are a major menace to wildlife and to the integrity of the natural environment. Such animals should be humanely eliminated. The links below give details on this serious environmental issue. From the first link below (other links are at the end of this post):

"The American Ornithologists' Union, American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians, Inc., and the Cooper Ornithological Society have concluded that feral, homeless, lost, abandoned, or free-ranging domestic cats are proven to have serious negative impacts on bird populations, and have contributed to the decline of many bird species. Worldwide, cats may have been involved in the extinction of more bird species than any other cause, except habitat destruction;"

The Wildlife Society, a prestigious organization with a reputation for professionalism and scientific integrity, endorses the following measures:

<<<<The policy of The Wildlife Society in regard to feral and free-ranging domestic cats is to:
1. Strongly support and encourage the humane elimination of feral cat colonies.
2. Support the passage and enforcement of local and state ordinances prohibiting the public feeding
of feral cats, especially on public lands, and release of unwanted pet or feral cats into the wild.
3. Strongly support educational programs and materials that call for all pet cats to be kept indoors,
in outdoor enclosures, or on a leash.
4. Support programs to educate and encourage pet owners to neuter or spay their cats, and
encourage all pet adoption programs to require potential owners to spay or neuter their pet.
5. Support the development and dissemination of sound, helpful information on what individual cat
owners can do to minimize predation by free-ranging cats.
6. Pledge to work with the conservation and animal welfare communities to educate the public about
the negative impact of free-ranging and feral cats on native wildlife, including birds, small
mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and endangered species.
7. Support educational efforts to encourage the agricultural community to keep farm-cat numbers at
low, manageable levels and use alternative, environmentally safe rodent control methods.
8. Encourage researchers to develop better information on the impacts of feral and free-ranging cats
on native wildlife populations.
9. Recognize that cats as pets have a long association with humans, and that responsible cat owners
are to be encouraged to continue caring for the animals under their control.
10. Oppose the passage of any local or state ordinances that legalize the maintenance of "managed"
(trap/neuter/release) free-ranging cat colonies.
Approved by Council March 2006. Expires March 2011.>>>>

All this needs to be done wherever these amimals have established significant populations. In other words, what is needed here is SENSIBLE SLAUGHTER!

preach that gospel! I whole heartedly agree with you. If people were responsible pet owners there would not be feral cats out there, but then again some people are not even resposible parents to their kids and we all know they can run wild should we just put them down too?

The irresponsible parents and pet owners? Not a bad idea!
