Its All About Business
If you were in business and your competitors were selling lots and lots ofIce Cream, would you want to sell Ice Cream so you could keep your customers coming into your establishment?
If you are in the food business, history shows alcoholic beverages improve the bottom line by a large percentage...The purpose of being in business is to make money...hopefully, you can make lots of it...
That is simply, what the Sheffield Councilmen are allowing the citizens to vote on...whether to allow their food establishments to improve their bottom line or not..
Some individuals can't get past the reliqious reasons and will not support it...I believe most of the citizens, if given the chance...will no longer allow their Sheffield merchants to operate at an disadvantage any longer with their Florence Food Competitors...I predict, that if it passes in Sheffield, you will see the food establishments in Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia go to their City Council and ask for the same consideration...as they do not want to be left out in the cold...
The Colbert County citizens from a business stand point made a real bad decision during that Sunday sales referendum...and shot their selves in the foot, when it came to getting large chain restaurants on their side of the river...Don't believe me!...Simply count the number of chains that have gone in during the past year in Florence vs Colbert side...and you will have your answer..

So Sheffield will ask for Sunday sales. Do they really think that this will solve all of their problems?

It may not solve all their problems, afterall, there are ALWAYS going to be problems... everywhere. But if you count them, Sheffield has more clubs and drinking establishments than any other town we have... Just count them... Sunday Sales would sure help them financially.

The bill says that it would allow restaurants and hotels to serve alcohol on Sundays. Does anyone see a restaurant or hotel moving out of Muscle Shoals (for example) and coming to Sheffield because of Sunday sales?

Well, if you count the 2 clubs located in Webster Inn, Holiday Inn, Outback and several more resturants that serve alcohol, then you have a lot of revenue... and the are also talking about convenience stores too.

According to the bill, it would only allow Sunday sales in restaurants and hotels. This would leave the lounges, convenient stores, etc. out. If you were a restaurant owner in Muscle Shoals or Tuscumbia, would you move your business so you could sale alcohol on Sunday?

Like I said, Webster Inn, Holiday Inn, Outback and other resturants,... it would bring them much more revenue. They have their own... and some of those "lounges" you are talking about sells food, so they would qualify.
I'm not sure how many of those "lounges" have a restaurant retail liquor license and how many do not. With a restaurant retail license they have to abide by the 51-49 rule. With the existing businesses you can expect some extra revenue on Sunday, however, I don't really see any businesses relocating to Sheffield just for the Sunday sales. That is what is going to help Sheffield increase its bottom line. As I stated in my original post, I wonder if they think this solves all of their problems?

pI know of 2 more of those so-called lounges that has that license... and AGAIN, with what they already have, they don't need anyone to move over there, although, that would not be UNfeasible, ... Also, Casa has a liquor license that is another one I forgot. There are some on Montgomery Ave that has those licenses, so small-town Sheffield with at least 5 big businesses that could sell alcohol would fare very well with Sunday Sales.

If you had to guess, how much revenue do you think these existing businesses will funnel into the bottom line of Sheffield just off of Sunday alcohol sales in a years time?

Offhand, counting Outback, Holiday Inn, Webster Inn and Casa, probably a lot. Sheffield is a very small town, and just those mentioned would bring them extra's that they need.

No, Nash, ... none of those. They are a very small town, but they do have a few really good resturants such as Outback, Webster, Casa Mexicana, Holiday Inn... all with beverage license. There are 2 resturants downtown, and I cannot remember their names, but they serve food, and they have the license also, and very popular.

I think that is all they have, but I may be wrong about that... but just with what I have just mentioned would be a huge shot in the arm for that small town.
Am I correct that Sheffield just had to cut almost one million out of their budget from the previous year. This included a near $400,000 appropriation to the school system. I don't see how adding an extra few hours of selling alcohol to the existing establishments is going to pull that kind of revenue for the city. They are certainly going to have to hope that some businesses relocate to Sheffield and that some new restaurants wanting to come to the Shoals area choose them over Florence. I'm probably wrong, but I don't see Ruby Tuesday's moving a mile down the road just to sell a drink on Sunday. I don't think it would pay for the move. And to answer NashBama...An Outback, locally owned George's Steakhouse (who I think is closed now on Sunday), and a Casa Mexican restaurant are the only "major" or "semi-major" eating establishments in Sheffield.
For a town as small as Sheffield, I think Sunday Sales just might give them back what they have lost otherwise, but I also think they should include ANY place that sells alcohol. Any store, any club.

I havent drank in years, but I believe strongly in the rights of others over 21 to do as they please, as long as they have their designated driver or a cab waiting on them, ANY day of the week.

Adults are ADULTS on Sunday too, not just 6 days a week.

I think you are right... it IS a step in the right direction, and I hope it works for them!!! I don't live in Sheffield, but I have many many friends who do... I would love to see Sheffield get better.
