Snubbed RI Democrat Says Obama Can Take His Endorsement and "Shove It"

by April Girouard | October 25, 2010

President Obama Monday is heading to Rhode Island to visit a manufacturing facility and make remarks at a fundraiser, but Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio is hardly rolling out the welcome mat.

"He can take his endorsement and really shove it," Caprio, who recently discovered the president will not be supporting him, told Providence radio station WPRO Monday morning.

Caprio says he was told by a reporter Sunday night that the president would not be endorsing him. A campaign spokesman for former Senator Lincoln Chafee told the Providence Journal that the lack of endorsement was a "victory" for the Republican-turned-independent, who endorsed President Obama in 2008.
.................
"We had one of the worst floods in the history of the United States a few months back, and President Obama didn't even do a flyover of Rhode Island like President Bush did when New Orleans had their problems," he said. "He ignored us, and now he's coming to into Rhode Island and treating us like an ATM machine."

"What I'm saying to President Obama very clearly is I'll wear it as a badge of honor and a badge of courage that he doesn't want to endorse me as a Democrat," he said, citing his own focus on job creation, "because I am a different kind of Democrat."

From the Associated Press:
The Democratic candidate for Rhode Island governor told President Barack Obama on Monday to "shove it" after learning Obama would not endorse him.

Frank Caprio's campaign last week said he would welcome the president's endorsement. But on Monday, the same day Obama was set to make his first visit to Rhode Island as president and a day after the White House said Obama would not endorse anyone, Caprio
angrily told WPRO-AM that Obama can "take his endorsement and really shove it."

Caprio's independent opponent, Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican senator who served with Obama for two years, gave a high-profile endorsement to Obama ahead of the Democratic primary in 2008.

Obama is scheduled to visit a factory in Woonsocket and then attend two fundraisers in Providence for congressional candidates.

Caprio had been invited to the tour and one of the fundraisers, but he indicated he would not attend after learning Sunday night that the White House publicly announced it would not endorse him.

"It's an agenda that they're driving," he said.

The White House wouldn't comment on Caprio's remarks. Mike Trainor, Chafee's acting campaign manager, called the remarks unfortunate.

"The senator was shocked at how intemperate the remark was, especially with the president due to arrive in Rhode Island later today," Trainor said. "Perhaps the strain of the campaign is wearing on Treasurer Caprio."

Caprio and Chafee are locked in a four-way race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Don Carcieri, along with Republican John Robitaille and Moderate Party candidate Ken Block. There have been no reliable polls in the race.

Caprio also accused the president of "treating us like an ATM machine," and ignoring Rhode Island during springtime flooding that swept through the state. Though Obama did not visit himself, he sent cabinet secretaries, including Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Caprio called Obama's decision "Washington insider politics at its worst" and accused Obama of plotting behind-the-scenes with Chafee to endorse the independent. Caprio spokesman Nick Hemond said he did not know what evidence Caprio had to back up his claim.

Chafee has said he did not ask for Obama's endorsement, and Trainor said Monday there was no truth to the claim.

Spokespeople for members of the Democratic congressional delegation did not immediately comment or did not immediately return requests for comment on Caprio's remarks. The head of the state Democratic Party also did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

But Giovanni Cicione, head of the state Republican Party, called Caprio's comments disrespectful and said Caprio's campaign was in "meltdown mode."

"To take that kind of an attitude in a public statement, I think was very disrespectful and I think it's a shame," he said.

"It shows that he's not the sort of calm collected person he tried to present himself as."

A little different slant when you read this article that FOX news didn't report. Actually, this should appeal to the independents out there. Sour grapes from this guy and showing how President Obama doesn't necessarily support just the Democratic candidate. Thanks B50m for pointing this out!!!

He forgot he won in 2008 and he is still campaigning. Of course, you can't blame the guy, he hasn't sat in the Oval office long enough to remember where it is.
From the associated press as of July 17, 2010:
President Obama has spent all or part of 65 days on vacation, including days at Camp David. At this point in his tenure, George W. Bush had logged 120 days. That included 13 trips to his Texas ranch.
Relaxed Obama goes on vacation with family
Maybe the president, who is in Maine with his family this weekend, fears that time off brings bad things.

Consider:

• Last summer's Obama family trip to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Canyon National Park was altered to include town meetings in Montana and Colorado so Obama could address the growing furor over his health care plan.

• Their Memorial Day weekend in Chicago was overtaken by the Gulf oil spill. After the Obamas slept at their Chicago home for the first time in a year, the president got up and left for a daylong Gulf inspection tour.

• The Obamas' Christmas trip to Hawaii was interrupted repeatedly for briefings and comment on the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound jet.

• And last summer's Martha's Vineyard stay was marred by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, whose Boston funeral Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended.

It seems when President Obama does take a vacation he is still working. What was GWB doing in Crawford Texas that time when we were deploying to Iraq? Oh yeah, telling reporters to watch him "take this shot" at golf.
Awww... maybe he should've gone with Michelle and the girls to Spain. That seemed to be an event-filled, uninterrupted vacation. Again, at whose expense? Maybe there wasn't room for him if she took her 26 servants. Not that she did, but afterall, what/who would they be serving at the White House if she's not there???

********

I would think you three could a little nicer to our first communist, illegal, anti american
moron presssss.....dang can't say it
This only shows that you folks hate Obama for who he is, not for what he does. What Rocky posted about Bush taking twice as many vacation days is true, but that doesn't matter to you because he was Bush.

And as far as the "shove it" comment goes, if I lived in Rhode Island and HAD planned on voting for him, I wouldn't after hearing that. Whatever happened to professionalism, whatever happened to class? I would NOT want to elect anyone who is incapable of choosing his words well enough to sound like an adult.
No, I hate him for his polices, not him. He's a likable guy.

He also has an ego bigger than TEXAS and loves to see himself on TV. LOL

Hey, if you were running as a democrat and the president backed your opponent even under the table, what would you do?

As for professionalism, that went out the window with the non-stop attacks on Bush. And they were personal: They hit his speech, his education, his looks, his home town, his kids, etc.......
This guy just said to shove the endorsement. He never said anything personal about Bush.

Congressman Pete Stark
“President Bush sends our troops off to Iraq to get their heads blown up for his amusement”

North Dakota’s U.S. Rep. Earl Pomeroy calls President Bush a “clown” and says he “can’t stand” him in a new video posted on the Internet.

SEN. REID
"President Bush is a liar. He betrayed Nevada and he betrayed the country."

Democrat Dennis Kucinich introduced a 35-count resolution to impeach U.S. President George W. Bush, claiming that the president set out to deceive the nation, and violated his oath of office with the Iraq war.

Why did you hate Bush? What's good for one is good for the other. I hate obama's socialist policies. As far as Bush taking vacations, he was president for 8 years. At the rate obama is going he will soon reach, then exceed Bush's "vacation record".
