The idea was to provide a counterweight to all the shouting and flying insults of these polarized times. But there were political undertones, too, pushing back against conservatives ahead of Tuesday's election.

Slogans urged people to "relax." But also: "Righties, don't stomp on my head," a reference to a Republican rally in Kentucky at which a liberal activist was pulled to the ground and stepped on. And, "I wouldn't care if the president was Muslim."

Shannon Escobar, 31, of Bangor, Pa., came with a group of 400 people on buses chartered in New York. A supporter of President Barack Obama in 2008, she said she's tired of nasty rhetoric from both sides and disenchanted with lack of progress in Washington.

"I want to see real change – not Obama change," she said. "We need a clean slate and start over with people really working together."

A regular viewer of Stewart's "The Daily Show," she said she had a dream that he ran for political office, but got "corrupt and dirty."

"I need him to stay pure," she said, deadpan.

Stewart is popular with Democrats and independents, a Pew Research Center poll found. The stage featured entertainers associated with Democratic causes or Obama's 2008 campaign, but no political sermons from them.

Stewart said the day was about toning down anger, partisan division and shouting.

"If we amplify everything," he said, "we hear nothing."

Many of the attendees, sporting stickers that read "Vote Sanity," said they enjoyed the rally's positive message, even if the program ultimately stuck mostly to entertainment. In the days leading to the event, organizers had refused to release a full schedule of speakers, leaving fans uncertain about what to expect.

"I thought it was awesome, with good music. We came for a rally to restore sanity, and that's what we got," said Joe Stroup, 31, of Portland, Ore. "But is it going to bring lasting change? I doubt it."

It seems a lot of people were disappointed, but hey, it was put together by comedians.
Long live pot.
“Rally to Restore Sanity” pledges to “strictly prohibit filming” at National Mall

Irony reaches new heights as Comedy Central is going to “strictly prohibit filming” of the Rally to Restore Sanity/March to Keep Fear Alive. PJTV’s Washington Bureau chief Richard Pollock inquired with the Comedy Central’s senior vice president of corporate communications Steve Albani about receiving credentials. Albani claimed that Pollock would not be given credentials because of limited supply, and as such there would be no room on the “press riser” for PJTV’s camera and crew. When Pollock said that he’d be fine with filming not on the press riser, Albani said that filming would be “strictly prohibited” between 3rd and 7th streets on the National Mall (ground zero for the event). The email exchange is further down.

Disappointed by what? I love the lefties desperation. You went nuts making fun of Beck and turn right around and try to do the same thing. Oh well. As far as the "I am not a witch" signs, maybe we should carry signs saying "I don't channel or talk to dead people", at Hitlery Clintoon's appearances. I guess you lefties forgot that little talking to the dead thingy Hitlery had going. Uh huh.

Its really quite pointless to argue with these people. Your giving them exactly what they want. They just don't get it. They don't get that the country is full of many different types of people with many different beliefs. They don't understand compromise. They want things "THEIR" way....100%. They worship Beck, O'Riley and Faux News. They beleive everything they are told by them even if they don't even understand what they are saying. They don't get that the media is manipulating and the tea party has been hijacked. They won't hear anything else. They don't want peace or compromise. They don't understand that the rally was all about NONE POLITICS. Finding the humor in it all. Taking it down a notch. Understanding that the country is full of all kinds of people with all kinds of beleifs and no one is going to change that. The only way to go forward is through compromise. But they want to go backwards. Unfortunatly, thats not going to happen. The youth of this country will not go backwards. They don't poll cell phones and most people under 35 have cell phones. The tea party reminds everyone what could happen if they don't act civically responsible and go vote.

PS: I was at the rally and it was awesome. Some on the right may have a hard time understanding this because it was just the opposite from what they are used to. It wasn't a gathering of fear filled, hate filled, rage filled desperate people. But rather a gathering of loving, peaceful, hope filled, people. People who can see the humor in the overexagerated media malaise of political coverage, while understanding that we are all neighbors. And that no political party DEFINES "who" we are AS individuals or what each of us believe in. We are all individuals, we all have our own beleifs. We need to respect each other and try to work together. We work together everyday "non-political" lives. Washington has fallen into a black hole. They cannot compromise and don't accomplish anything. And the media tries its best to divide us to make us as dysfuncitional as Washington. Rallys have always been about hope not hate. Thats the way they should be.

Sounds like your democratic party to me. Remember, your leader said "I WON", we do things my way.

If you think Beck's Honoring America was full of hate, you listen to the left too much. Even Arianna Huffington said it was a great thing.

Seems like all the things you say are wrong with the right, the right believes about the left. There was no hate message from Beck's rally.

As for your CBS estimate, that was shot down on page one.
My computer is a little flakey, B.

I keep telling you, it was SATIRE. It wasn't "for unity", it was to point out to everyone how out of hand and downright silly political campaigning has become.

But ferrelj, while we're on the subject, Beck's rally was supposed to be non-partisan, wasn't it? How many from the left do you think attended that?
Your computer has been flakey ever since I've been on here. Big Grin Beck's rally was non-political. I'm sure most attendees were conservative. If Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar had a rally to give away free ice cream I'm sure their crowd would be all liberals. If they went to so much trouble for a rally then why make it satire? Don't they stand for anything?

Well, if any one had family members being honored from the left, I'm sure they were there. The 9/12 rally was a political rally, the Restoring Honor was more family values, and honoring soldiers.

Sure, but we are careful of the source it comes from. Behar had said many times GWB should have been assassinated, so a little poison in the ice cream would be on par for her 'conservative' friends. Wink
