STEVENSON, AL (WAFF) -
A Jackson County man is in critical condition after what investigators believe to be a machete attack.
On Sunday, deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Stevenson police officers responded to the attack on County Road 75.
The victim, 41-year-old Chris Gaylor of Stevenson, was severely wounded on his arm and leg by what is believed to be a machete. Officials said Gaylor could lose portions of his arm and leg.
Investigators said the attack was prompted by issues surrounding a dog. Neighbors said the man became upset after the dog defecated in a yard. They said Gaylor was apologizing for the dog's actions, and when he went to collect the dog's *****, the attack began.
"I think it's crazy," said one man who witnessed the attack. "He shouldn't deserve that, just because of a dog."
Meanwhile, the attacker fled the scene, but investigators are working toward building a case against him.
"Our investigators are trying to get a positive identification from the victim as we speak," said Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen. "We've got information it may have started verbally in the front yard, then it moved out into the roadway, where the cutting actually took place."
Gaylor was transported to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he remains in critical condition.
