Airport surveillance video shows a 15-year-old stowaway easing his way out of a jetliner's front wheel well and stepping onto the tarmac in Hawaii after miraculously surviving a five-hour flight from San Jose, Calif., in the unpressurized compartment, authorities said today.

Lucky to be alive the wheel well is non-pressurized and I often see -40 or lower temps at altitude.

Hi: Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't somebody supposed to do a walk around preflight inspection on an aircraft prior to takeoff?
Ground crew? Captain? Anybody?
It's legally required for me to personally pre- and post-trip Inspect my bus after every run to catch things like defects or a bomb in the luggage compartment-and *I* never leave the ground...
Ya'd think it'd be more important to inspect an aircraft. Ya'd hafta have one helluva case of inattention blindness to miss a kid huggin' a gear strut....It *is* right out in the open...

I mean....even a handwritten note taped to the pilot's panel saying 'removed dumb kid from nose gear' would suffice..

Yes, all pilots will do a walk around. However, after they board the plane and it is sittiing on the tarmac they typiically are counting on security to keep people away from the plane. this is not the pilot's fault, but shows a lack of security at the airport.
Surveillance cameras aren't much use, if no one is watching the cameras.
Pup yes a walk around is mandatory but we do not climb into the wheel wells nor can you see all the way into them as they are above your height. Plenty of places for someone to hide because even though the gear is down fairings cover the a lot of the opening for aerodynamic purposes during flight.
How in the world could anyone get past airports crack security? Especially in this day and age!!
In this video, Jackson says he caught security guard Suhas Harite, 68, sleeping in a vehicle 150 yards from the spot where, in August, a stranded Jamaica Bay jet skier infiltrated JFK property and made his way across two runways before finally getting caught (when he asked someone for help). Jackson says he caught Harite sleeping twice, but Harite was not fired, just suspended for a week.
Jackson also scored a photo of another FJC security guard sleeping in a company car; last week the Port Authority banned her, Harite, and another sleepy worker caught on camera from working at any PA facility. But the damage is done, and the bad press could cost jeopardize FJC's multimillion-dollar contracts with the PA at all three area airports, and at World Trade Center. If only airplane engines weren't so soothing FJC would never be in this mess!
