Once more, the impetuous and self-aggrandizing Troy King screws things up for Alabama.
Now the varmint's lawsuit against BP has backfired to the harm of the state's budget.

There was NO NEED for the impetuous filing of the lawsuit against BP other than King's need to promote himself. The governor tried to keep King from filing it, preferring to try to work things out and not to litigate unless it became necessary. Now, if King doesn't back off, the fallout will hurt the status of education in this state.

The BP oil spill was and is a disaster for Alabama.

The same goes for Troy King.

I don't think it's a case of the governor "planning his budget around the oil spill." Remember, the oil spill caused a huge and unexpected loss of revenue due to the fact that people did not vacation on Alabama's coast this year. With education funded largely by consumption taxes, the loss of tourism dollars hammered the Education Trust Fund.

Troy King's lawsuit should not have been filed. Democrats and Republicans (including both candidates for AG) agree on that.
I'm not economist, but you don't have to be to know the oil spill damaged Alabama coast tourism. Those missed dollars definitely impacted education funds.

I read somewhere the other day that Alabama State University did a survey that showed 44% of Alabamians normally take a summer vacation, 62% normally go to Florida/Alabama beaches, and that nearly 1/3 had changed their beach plans because of the oil spill.

But I do agree with you that the recession alone deterred a lot of vacation plans. Add that to the oil spill and you have unexpected loss of revenue to the schools.
