Has anyone here followed the History Channel's mini-series, "The Bible"?  If you have,. and if you know anything much about the Bible, you will have noted that the TV version takes considerable liberties with the Book.

For example, can anyone explain why Samson is portrayed by a black actor with dreadlocks?

Samson was an Isrtaelite, the son of Manoah, of the tribe of Dan (Judges 13:2).

That is one of the major misrepresentations. There are plenty of others, some not so significant, but nevertheless puzzling.  Just one example: The Bible says that Abraham, instead of sacrificing his son, Isaac, sacrifices a ram that God provided.  The  ram was caught in a thicket by its horns, according to the Bible Genesis 22:13).  In the TV version, there is no ram, only a little lamb and its foot is caught in some part of a small tree or tree root. Why change details like that?

It's in the bible.

Numbers 6:5

“All the days of his vow of separation, no razor shall touch his head. Until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the Lord, he shall be holy. He shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long.

Ezekiel 44:20

They shall not shave their heads or let their locks grow long; they shall surely trim the hair of their heads.

Leviticus 21:5

They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts on their body.

Judges 16:13

Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.”

1 Samuel 1:11

And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”

Judges 16:19

She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.

Have not seen much of the series but I can almost guarantee you that Sodom and Gomorrah, if handled at all, were put forth without the least possibility of their sins being and including Homosexuality yet when Lot offered his Daughters unto them (the Men of Sodom) they would have no part of it and wanted the angels (men) instead to have sex with them.  I'm sure that part was overlooked if covered at all.  Certainly not Politically Correct in this time and surely not within Hollywood.

The one small snippet that I did see which was the portrayal of Israel leaving Egypt and slavery for freedom through the Red Sea and that was totally missed.  For one the Israelites were not led by a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day nor did the two go from before the Israelites and be a protecting wedge between the Children of Israel and Pharaoh's Army.  In most portrayals of the event also the parting of the Red Sea was an instantaneous event where in the Scriptures it is something that is built up over night by a strong East Wind to where they crossed on Dry Land.

There are also many skeptics that try and say that it wasn't the Red Sea but the Reed Sea but no matter the crossing (and I accept the Red Sea) those that want to say it was a trickle of water such as the Reed Sea have a tough time with how Pharaoh's army was totally annihilated in such a small stream.  You either have faith in the stories or you don't.  As for me I accept that the renderings of what is recorded are accurate.  I do believe there is much left out but enough important information that Believers can learn from the stories and derive comfort from them.

One thing that is tough for me to grasp is how the people of Israel, after seeing and witnessing such great acts from God, firsthand, could so easily turn their back upon God and become so doubtful that He (God) would see them through.  Still though today I wonder how anyone who experiences such power as God's Holy Spirit in their life, at Salvation, can doubt God and turn from Him but I suppose it's all a part of our inborn human nature.

Maybe the deviations from actual Scripture were just for theatrical effect.  After all Mel Gibson seemed to do so well and made so much money off of his highly accurate portrayal of Jesus Crucifixion that a few liberties here and there could only enhance it, or so they might be thinking.

Your suspicions about how the immorality at Sodomwere handled are dead on, gbrk. The first installment of the series depicted the city as being full of sexual immorality, but all the depictions, without exception, were of heterosexual goings-on, of men and women lasciviously  carousing.  There was nothing in the script that had anything to do with homosexual behavior. Political correctness reigns in the entertainment media.

No, Best.  And that is a truly silly comment.  Homosexual rape (which is what the Sodomites wanted to commit upon Lot's guests) and heterosexual rape are both criminal actions and should be punished.  My observation was that the homosexual part of the account was totally omitted and it is a very central element of the story. Good grief!  We are dealing here with SODOM!  Doesn't that say something to you?

There is absolutely nothing in that story that connotes approval of the offer of the two daughters.  The story factually describes that event, but does not imply or conclude in any way that it was approved by God.

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

OK, he could have spared the innocent daughters.

I think I will become a preacher.
