Before I retired, Blue Cross would come down every year and tell us why our insurance was going up again. Their stated reason was ALWAYS the cost of prescription meds. Number one on their list was Prilosec (still scrip at the time) at $4/pill. The rest of the world got it for $1 / pill.
Incidentelly, not once , I say again - NOT ONE TIME- did they every say it was "trial lawyers" which is the stated reason that idiot president or ours gave for the upward cost of health care.
Last year after he got tort reform passed, Blue Cross celebrated by raising my rates about $50/month. Looks like just another thing he screwed up.
Wow, excelman, you sound like you worked at my company!!! BC/BS raised their rates this year, tremendously, AND to add insult to injury went DOWN on coverage!!! And started with 'certain' testings/surgical procedures it covered for many years, that now it says NO to...

BC/BS, USED to be the best medical health coverage... When I retire, I am going to go AARP, I read their book, and they beat BC/BS every day of the week, every way possible.
Wow!

Some REALLY good guesses here!

In 2004, with 92, 719, 975 prescriptions written, the most prescribed medication was Hydrocodone w/APAP.

(The 2d was Liptior, with 69, 766, 431.)

In 2004, the top five grossing prescriptions by U.S. sales in BILLIONS of $$ were:

Product - Corporation - Sales in BILLIONS
1.) Lipitor - Pfizer - $7.10
2.) Zocor - Merck & Co, Inc. - $5.50
3.) Prevacid - Tap Pharma - $4.00
4.) Nexium - Astrazenica Pharm, LP - $3.6
5.) Procrit - Johnson & Johnson - $3.30
