I would bet a majority in Alabama would like to see ALL gambling everywhere stopped. When you see more and more people blowing their money on gambling rather than buying health insurance and food, that's a terrible sign.

However, since that will never happen, I'm in favor of allowing it in Alabama. If people are going to blow it gambling, I'd rather our state get some revenue from it because we are going to have to spend money to provide for those fools.
I'm not a gambler. However, I find it ironic that folks who complain (rightly so) about government intrusion in our lives think its great for the government to tell people how they can spend their money.
Yes people will bet more than they should but they are also the people who will blow it on a big screen tv, the newest cell phone or some stupid looking after market rims instead of health insurance or other necessities. You cannot legislate responsibility into people.

I agree. Let the people vote!!
I'd like to see those results as well. Our state thinks that they are able to tell people how to spend their money instead of buying insurance or food? I highly doubt that will happen. If someone want's to gamble, guess what. They will. That would be just like saying we are gonna stop all alcohol sales in the state of Alabama, people will still get it if they want it.

Now, how do we go about getting the results of that telephone poll the other night about gambling? I'll bet the majority want gambling in Alabama but that won't matter either.

Call Milton McGregor. He will be happy to provide the results.

He will also be glad to take your money at any of the gambling operatons he runs.

He also will coach you on all the lies to propagate in support of the wondrous benefits of gambling.

Milton is your FRIEND!!!

Anti-gambling laws are ridiculous. Wagering your own money should not be a crime. I'm not enthusiastic about the state government getting involved and having a hand on gambling, however. Why can't they just take the laws off the books that make it a puishable crime and let adults make their own decisions? Is that so bad?

I agree with you IF....the non-gamblers of Alabama don't have to foot the bill for the idiots who can't stop and lose all their money, houses and cars. It happens everyday. Just ask the citizens of Memphis, Tn.

The non-gamblers DO foot the bills--the bills for additional police and court operations to deal with the additional crime that comes along with gambling and the bills for feeding and clothing the neglected families of gambling addicts.

Kentucky, which has lots of legal gambling, also has lots of state-erected billboards offering rehab for gambling addiction.

Gambling sucks!

I agree but it's a reality that effects us negatively without reaping any of the positives.

Truer words were never spoken. People are doing it. People are going to continue to do it. People have a legal right to do it and so they go somewhere else to do it. Alabama needs to have some more money coming in and here they have all these people more than willing to give it to them. I don't get it. We are a laughingstock. See?....

Hell may be freezing over. I actually agree with you. Adults should never be prohibited, by threat of criminal punishment, from gambling. With that freedom comes responsibility. No one should be forced to pay for a gambling addicts rent, food, etc...
Right, but those who want to gamble are going to do it, there or here. If they're going elsewhere to spend their money but Alabama still has to support them because they live here, doesn't it make sense that they at least spend their money here too? At least that way Alabama won't lose twice. Just think, maybe all the crack and meth heads will get addicted to gambling instead and spend their money where Alabama can actually get some of it. Big Grin

I don't agree with better much but this time I do. For most of us gambling isn't a big deal. But for those with addiction problems it overtakes their lives. The poor are affected the most. Go to the casinos, they will cash your welfare check there for you. Go ask the legal areas if their schools are better than before. It's more politician promises and we know how reliable they are. I'm not against a vote, I'll just vote no.
