Hi to my Forum Friends,

A Friend sent this story to me in an e-mail -- and I thought you might enjoy it.   And, it may offer some explanation about traditions and where they fit into our Christian faith.

THE POPE AND THE RABBI

Every time a new Pope is elected, there are many rituals in accordance with tradition -- but, there is one tradition that very few people know about.

Shortly after a new Pope is enthroned, the Chief Rabbi of Rome seeks an audience.  He is shown into the Pope's presence, whereupon he presents the Pope with a silver tray bearing a velvet cushion.  On top of the cushion is an ancient, shriveled envelope.  The Pope symbolically stretches out his arm in a gesture of rejection.  The Chief Rabbi then retires, taking the envelope with him and does not return until the next Pope is elected.

A new Pope's reign was shortly followed by a new Chief Rabbi.  He was intrigued by this ritual and that its origins were unknown to him.  He instructed the best scholars of the Vatican to research it, but they came up with nothing.

When the time came and the Chief Rabbi was shown into his presence, they faithfully enacted the ritual rejection but, as the Chief Rabbi turned to leave, the Pope called him back.

"My brother," the Pope whispered, "I must confess that we Catholics are ignorant of the meaning of this ritual enacted for centuries between us and you, the representative of the Jewish people.  I have to ask you.  What is it all about?"

The Chief Rabbi shrugged and replied: "We have no more idea than you do.  The origin of the ceremony is lost in the traditions of ancient history."

The Pope said: "Let us retire to my private chambers and enjoy a glass of kosher wine together.  Then with your agreement, we shall open the envelope and discover the secret at last."  The Chief Rabbi agreed.

Fortified in their resolve by the wine, they gingerly pried open the curling parchment envelope and with trembling fingers, the Chief Rabbi reached inside and extracted a folded sheet of similarly ancient paper.

As the Pope peered over his shoulder, he slowly opened it.  They both gasped with shock ?

It was a bill for the Last Supper -- from "Moishe the Caterer."

Smile!  God loves you!  And, a wee bit of humor is good for the soul!

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi all,

Have you ever noticed how when a person cannot come up with an intelligent thought -- he just mumbles and makes irrational noises?  Let's all be patient with poor Puppy; we don't really know why he cannot relate on an adult level -- maybe he had a bike accident or something which rendered him unable to relate and think as an adult.

Bless his heart,

Bill

Hi all,

Earlier, I wrote:  "Have you ever noticed how when a person cannot come up with an intelligent thought -- he just mumbles and makes irrational noises?"

And, by George, my dear Friend Vic jumps right in to prove my point!  Thank you, Vic.

And, of course, since I do not worship Mary nor pray the Rosary -- my dear Friend, VP, will take any and all opportunities to throw stones -- even when she is shooting in the dark.

Life is fun!  Bless your hearts -- all y'all!

Hi Dove,

I am so thrilled you are so eager to read my writings.  That alone makes it worthwhile.    It is coming!  Like the breath of fresh air after the rain -- it is coming.  Be patient, my dear Friend.  I know it is difficult to wait when something good is promised; but, just know that I would not disappoint YOU!   After all, you and I have been Forum Friends for so long.

Bless your heart!

Ahhh, Billie boy, you never never disappoint in you arrogance... Why should anyone wait for oh so humble you... I suspect you are very busy searching high and low for some rational answer to cut-and-paste. Just what we need, more of your inane blather...  I noted that you seem to take days to answer rational questions, and then it is usually a lame attempt to belittle the questioner... You attempt be the forum bully when all you really are is pesky little gnat that needs swatting...

Hi Quail,

Over the years, I have led Sunday School classes and have led Bible studies, both in our church fellowship and with groups outside our church fellowship.

I say "led" Sunday School and Bible study -- because I never consider myself as teaching, only leading a discussion.   A study group, Sunday School or Bible study, is much more effective when it is an interactive discussion -- with the person leading only keeping it on track.

And, I never like to stand at a pulpit or rostrum, preferring to sit with everyone else, in a living room environment or, at church, in chairs gathered in a circle.   This encourages more open discussion.  And, in my opinion, a study group which is not interactive and open -- is dead.

I have been in study group environments where the person leading made it more like a sermon than a study group; discouraging comments and questions.  That is not my style and definitely not my preference.  Typically, when I find such a group, my first visit is most often my last.

But, back to your question -- yes, I have, and I love to lead study groups -- and to participate in study groups.  That is how more of us can grow and mature in our knowledge of God's Word.  Growing more mature in His Word, and helping others grow more mature -- should be a primary goal for all Christian believers.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Crusty, my Friend,

I do believe you have stretched the length and width of your intelligence with that post.   But, in all honesty, it is as coherent as any you post.  I apologize if we have expected too much of you; so, we will just continue to smile at your childish, school-boy rants.

Bless you little heart!

See, that was just another #9.

If you ever say something intelligent, or just new, I might offer some other type of reply.  In the meantime, please embrace the system that I devised for you.  Even a simpleton such as yourself should be able to understand it.  It will save all of us a lot of time.

Bless your heart.

Have another blissed day, Bill.

So Bill if I understand you “keeping it on track” is the final say in the discussion.

When you are there is there an appointed teacher ? I somehow see you as a disruptive element in a discussion and a queue for the rolling of eyes knowing you are about to seize the discussion with a filibuster.

You of course are free to assume that role in the religious world but I have seen this before in congregations where a person shows up with a satchel full of diplomas signed by themselves and discovery finds them to be a circuit rider with a claim of understanding magic and the female anatomy as it applies to sex, robust in constantly suggesting if given the opportunity could amaze an audience on the subject in a Bible class.

Bill you don’t stay at any one congregation long at-a-time or do you?

#4 of what? I must have missed something......

Bill, all VP did was to point out your snarkiness towards Road Puppy. I wonder what Jesus would say about your behavior.

Hi Quail,

You ask, "So Bill if I understand you 'keeping it on track' is the final say in the discussion."

No, what I mean by "keeping the discussion on track" is that whoever is leading should be careful to not allow the Bible study or Sunday School class to wander off on tangents totally different from the lesson for that day.

In school, elementary, high school, or college, when the class was having a discussion, the teacher/professor keeps the class from wandering completely away from the lesson for that day.  You and I have seen, on this forum, how a discussion may start out talking about clouds -- and before we know it -- is talking about skunk droppings in Montana.

A leader, or in schools, a teacher, has the responsibility to keep the discussion from totally abandoning the lesson subject for that day.  But, on the other hand, we do not want to restrict constructive thoughts -- so, we allow the discussion to grow on its own for a while, then bring it back on track.  Otherwise, you would not have a discussion, you would have chaos -- as we have seen so frequently on this forum.

Next, you ask, "When you are there, is there an appointed teacher?  I somehow see you as a disruptive element in a discussion and a queue for the rolling of eyes knowing you are about to seize the discussion with a filibuster."

We have leaders, not teachers.  Whether I am leading or I am just in the class -- I am an active participant.  Do I "seize the discussion with a filibuster" as you so gently suggested?  No, but, I will ask questions and I will make comments when I feel they are relevant to the discussion.

Often, in a new Bible study, folks are reluctant to speak up.  Yet, when one person does, then others join in.  Some years ago, our senior pastor was the pastor for two churches as well as leading four Bible studies each week. This became too much for him, so he assigned four mature men to lead our Bible studies.

At one of the first, a Friend, Reuben, was leading -- but, no one would say a word -- total silence from everyone.  Reuben was doing all the talking and I notice that this was starting to affect him, I could sense that his throat was starting to constrict due to the stress of doing all the talking.

I know the feeling, since for years I presented MicroComputer Seminars before Bill Gates made personal computers household items.  When I could get the audience actively involved -- the seminar really took off and everyone learned from it.  But, there were times when everyone sat on his/her hands and the quietness was deafening.

So, I knew what Reuben was experiencing.  What did I do?  I asked a question.  And, voila!, all of a sudden others began to ask questions and make comments.  Our Bible study went from Reuben choking on his own words -- to an exciting Bible discussion.

Am I disruptive as you suggest?  I hope not.  My intent is to foster interactive discussions through which we all learn and grow in our knowledge of God's Word.

Next, you tell me, "You of course are free to assume that role in the religious world.  But I have seen this before in congregations where a person shows up with a satchel full of diplomas signed by themselves and discovery finds them to be a circuit rider with a claim of understanding magic and the female anatomy as it applies to sex, robust in constantly suggesting if given the opportunity could amaze an audience on the subject in a Bible class."

Since I have no idea what you are saying here -- and, I doubt seriously if you do either; I will just walk on past.  If you would like to decipher or translate that at a a later time, I will be happy to respond.

Finally, you ask, "Bill you don’t stay at any one congregation long at-a-time or do you?"

Well, let me see.  I was saved in the Filipino-American Church of Irvine, California, (a Baptist, BGC church) in 1987 and stayed there for about 10 years.  Then, I went to help a new Fil-Am Church in San Clemente which was affiliated with our Irvine church.  Dory helped with the music and I helped in other aspects of growing the relatively new church.

We were there for about 3 years until we moved to Corona in Riverside County.  About 12 years ago, in Corona, we became members of the Fil-Am Church of Corona (also affiliated with our Irvine church) where I served as one of the first Elders.  As an Elder, I also led Sunday School classes.

Twice during these last 12 years, Dory and I have stepped outside for a year or two to help in the planting of other local Baptist Fil-Am churches in the Corona area.  But, we always came back to our home Fil-Am Church of Corona where we have maintained our membership.

So, no, I would not say that we are church hopping; only following God's lead when He wants to use us in another place.  Is there a problem with that?

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

But, NO!  I will not marry you!

Yesterday morning, the 20 year old daughter of a close Christian sister was killed in a car accident on the freeway.  And, that has taken much of the wind from my sails.  She was such a beautiful girl, with all of her life ahead of her -- and in a split second she was gone.  I don't know all the details yet.  A Friend in Santa Barbara who is their relative called to tell me -- and I was too shocked to ask any questions about how it happened.

Just last week her mom had posted photos of her 20th Birthday Party on Facebook -- and I had commented about how quickly she had become 20 years old; when I still think of her as that small child in church.

But, please keep my Christian sister, Jean, in your prayers.  She had two daughters and this was the youngest.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Still waiting....
