Hi Quail,
You ask, "So Bill if I understand you 'keeping it on track' is the final say in the discussion."
No, what I mean by "keeping the discussion on track" is that whoever is leading should be careful to not allow the Bible study or Sunday School class to wander off on tangents totally different from the lesson for that day.
In school, elementary, high school, or college, when the class was having a discussion, the teacher/professor keeps the class from wandering completely away from the lesson for that day. You and I have seen, on this forum, how a discussion may start out talking about clouds -- and before we know it -- is talking about skunk droppings in Montana.
A leader, or in schools, a teacher, has the responsibility to keep the discussion from totally abandoning the lesson subject for that day. But, on the other hand, we do not want to restrict constructive thoughts -- so, we allow the discussion to grow on its own for a while, then bring it back on track. Otherwise, you would not have a discussion, you would have chaos -- as we have seen so frequently on this forum.
Next, you ask, "When you are there, is there an appointed teacher? I somehow see you as a disruptive element in a discussion and a queue for the rolling of eyes knowing you are about to seize the discussion with a filibuster."
We have leaders, not teachers. Whether I am leading or I am just in the class -- I am an active participant. Do I "seize the discussion with a filibuster" as you so gently suggested? No, but, I will ask questions and I will make comments when I feel they are relevant to the discussion.
Often, in a new Bible study, folks are reluctant to speak up. Yet, when one person does, then others join in. Some years ago, our senior pastor was the pastor for two churches as well as leading four Bible studies each week. This became too much for him, so he assigned four mature men to lead our Bible studies.
At one of the first, a Friend, Reuben, was leading -- but, no one would say a word -- total silence from everyone. Reuben was doing all the talking and I notice that this was starting to affect him, I could sense that his throat was starting to constrict due to the stress of doing all the talking.
I know the feeling, since for years I presented MicroComputer Seminars before Bill Gates made personal computers household items. When I could get the audience actively involved -- the seminar really took off and everyone learned from it. But, there were times when everyone sat on his/her hands and the quietness was deafening.
So, I knew what Reuben was experiencing. What did I do? I asked a question. And, voila!, all of a sudden others began to ask questions and make comments. Our Bible study went from Reuben choking on his own words -- to an exciting Bible discussion.
Am I disruptive as you suggest? I hope not. My intent is to foster interactive discussions through which we all learn and grow in our knowledge of God's Word.
Next, you tell me, "You of course are free to assume that role in the religious world. But I have seen this before in congregations where a person shows up with a satchel full of diplomas signed by themselves and discovery finds them to be a circuit rider with a claim of understanding magic and the female anatomy as it applies to sex, robust in constantly suggesting if given the opportunity could amaze an audience on the subject in a Bible class."
Since I have no idea what you are saying here -- and, I doubt seriously if you do either; I will just walk on past. If you would like to decipher or translate that at a a later time, I will be happy to respond.
Finally, you ask, "Bill you don’t stay at any one congregation long at-a-time or do you?"
Well, let me see. I was saved in the Filipino-American Church of Irvine, California, (a Baptist, BGC church) in 1987 and stayed there for about 10 years. Then, I went to help a new Fil-Am Church in San Clemente which was affiliated with our Irvine church. Dory helped with the music and I helped in other aspects of growing the relatively new church.
We were there for about 3 years until we moved to Corona in Riverside County. About 12 years ago, in Corona, we became members of the Fil-Am Church of Corona (also affiliated with our Irvine church) where I served as one of the first Elders. As an Elder, I also led Sunday School classes.
Twice during these last 12 years, Dory and I have stepped outside for a year or two to help in the planting of other local Baptist Fil-Am churches in the Corona area. But, we always came back to our home Fil-Am Church of Corona where we have maintained our membership.
So, no, I would not say that we are church hopping; only following God's lead when He wants to use us in another place. Is there a problem with that?
God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,
Bill
