From The blog at Lew Rockwell:

"They keep saying climate change is “settled science” but I don’t think they know what that means. chemical bonding theory is settled science. gravitational theory is settled science. laws of motion is settled science. the weight of an electron is settled science. Why? Do you hear anyone debating these things? No, because they are based on reproducible results that allow one to make accurate, testable predictions 100% of the time.

No one disagrees that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, so yes, that’s settled. The disagreement is over the degree of positive or negative feedback that will either attenuate or accentuate the effect of increasing greenhouse gas. And since the models haven’t accurately predicted the current pause in the rise in temperature for the last 15 years or so, then I guess something is wrong with the models isn’t it? Doesn’t seem very settled to me.

But that’s just one side of the issue. Even if it were definitely proven that temperature would rise 2°C by the end of the century, the rest of what follows, that is, wild predictions of famine, crop failure, etc is not “science” and it certainly isn’t settled. It is simply speculation based on a simplistic analysis (hot=dry=dead). But of course we need these wild predictions of impending doom, since if the scientists said temperature would go up but that’s about it we would all just shrug our shoulders and move on. The political class always needs an excuse to “do” something and this is the perfect one.

For some reason the well recognized fact that rising temperatures lengthens the growing season and expands the regions that support farming further northward is simply ignored in this analysis…it’s the usual sort of analysis you see from the Keynesian economists wherein they only highlight the seen effect they wish to focus on and ignore the unseen effects that don’t fit their desired narrative."

Geophysicist and associate professor of arts and sciences at the University of Oklahoma, David Deming on "Why I Deny Global Warming":

"...Finally, I’m happy to be known as a “denier” because the label of “denier” says nothing about me, but everything about the person making the charge. Scientific theories are never denied or believed, they are only corroborated or falsified. Scientific knowledge, by its very nature, is provisional and subject to revision...

...A scientific theory cannot be “denied.” Only a belief can be denied. The person who uses the word “denier” thus reveals that they hold global warming as a belief, not a scientific theory.  Beliefs are the basis of revealed religion. Revelations cannot be corroborated or studied in the laboratory, so religions are based on dogmatic beliefs conservatively held. Religions tend to be closed systems of belief that reject criticism. But the sciences are open systems of knowledge that welcome criticism. I’m a scientist, and therefore I must happily confess to being a denier."

BREAKING: War on Coal hits home, Alabama Power forced to shut down coal units

Gorgas Steam Plant near Parrish, Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alabama Power announced Friday that federal environmental mandates are forcing them to close two of the state’s coal-fired units and transition two others from coal to natural gas, resulting in a reduction in workforce that the company hopes to avoid by transferring employees to other locations.

Because of rules tied to federal environmental regulations, Alabama Power will close two smaller coal units at Plant Gorgas in Walker County. Two more units at Plant Barry, in Mobile County, will cease using coal but will remain available on a limited basis using natural gas. A third coal unit at Barry will begin using gas, but its capability will not be impacted as significantly as the other two units, according to a release by Alabama Power.

Another significant change will take place at Plant Greene County, where the company will cease using coal and switch to natural gas. Because of this transition, the plant is expected to reduce its workforce by about half.

“Federal environmental mandates are forcing us to change how we generate electricity for our customers,” said Matt Bowden, Alabama Power’s vice president for environmental affairs. “They are putting new restrictions on our ability to provide our customers with the energy they need in a cost-effective manner.”

On top of these regulations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed the first-ever rules related to greenhouse gases for existing power plants. If these rules are put in place, they could force the company to make additional costly changes to meet federal mandates, the company said Friday.

The EPA held public hearings on the newly proposed rules this week in Atlanta, GA. Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange, two members of Alabama’s Public Service Commission, a senior advisor to Governor Bentley, and several other Alabama leaders testified against the rules, warning the EPA that they will cause irreparable harm to the state’s economy.

Alabama Power said today that they have spent a total of more than $3 billion to meet federal environmental mandates, and are in the process of spending another $1 billion to comply with new federal environmental regulations tied to air emissions. Further spending could be required to meet future federal environmental regulations tied to water, land and coal combustion byproducts.

The plant changes announced today are expected to be completed by 2016.

“These facilities are vital to the communities they serve, providing quality jobs and supporting local economies,” said Jim Heilbron, senior production officer for Alabama Power. “Many of our plants are located in rural communities, which make the jobs they provide even more important.

“Fuel diversity helps protect customers from price volatility and potential shortages of any one fuel source,” he continued. “Unfortunately, new restrictions on coal expose our customers to these risks, while further hindering our ability to serve our customers in a reliable and cost-effective manner.”
