Iran's push towards nuclear weapons began after the Iraqi invasion. By that point, there wasn't enough political capital left to begin a third war. It is doubtful that the US military could handle three theaters of operation effectively, as it has struggled a bit with two.

Iran and Pakistan have been greater threats since pre-911, but the political & popular will has not been there for those countries. People ask why Iraq. In late 2002 and early 2003, how many Americans could name the leaders of Iran or Pakistan? Even now, how many could tell you the origins of the Taliban in Afghanistan? Everyone could tell you about Saddam and how bad he was. Even giving that the Government lied about WMD's in Iraq, they had to "sell" the war in Iraq. Would they have been able to sell a third or fourth war? Or even just a second war (not going to Iraq but Iran instead)? Perhaps the lies about WMD matter more now than when the war started. Just before the war (when the lies were most effective), 55% of the US didn't think WMD would be found according to the washington post & ABC news. So if 67% were in favor of the war, but 55% didn't think we'd find WMD, was the lie that good to begin with?

Possibly the largest mistake about the war is public opinion was followed. We are for the most part opinionated on subjects we know horribly little about, and are unwilling to learn more than the 30 second news clip tells us.
none of this gets us beyond the simple fact that even in 2002, ther wouldn't have been enough support for a war with Iran, moreover a war with Iran would have been much more difficult to win since we haven't been bombing them without pause since 1998 (Attacks on Iraq have been ongoing since operation desert fox) The only reason Clinton didn't invade Iraq with ground troops is he lacked the political support. That bombing continued until the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, so one could say that OIF is just an escalation of Desert Fox.

Oh, I don't know....I kinda like the sound of deceased equine flesh being pummeled and pounded repeatedly...plus, if they're griping on line, I don't have to worry about running into them out in public..

lol true enough. I'm going out in public now though!
Shoot yes we invaded...I was there.

Below is PROOF:

This is my HUMV-view as we crossed the Kuwait-Iraqi border, 0645 21 MAR 2003 Kuwait-Iraqi time

And this is where I ended up, 11 APR 2003, Presidential Palace North, NE of the formerly known as Saddam Hussein International Airport....I got my first REAL bath in over 3 months in the servants quarters here...

Here are the swords everyone knows about...Saddam used to have his "vaunted" Republican Guard parade down this way...now you see the American Army using it as a staging area.

Spoils of war: captured AK's, SKS's, etc. Being a gun collector, I was like a kid let loose in a candy store looking at all the weapons we captured...

Nazi German weaponry captured in Iraq. Bottom: MP-40 Machine Pistol; Top: Sturmgewhr STG-44 Assault Rifle. Unfortuneatley, we can't bring captured weaponry back to the states...OH, I wanted SOOO bad to bring these back. I heard they were going back to the states for museum useage.
I used to be an avid hunter/gun collector, until I got ripped off. I even lived next door to the local head of the DEA/NADU. D*mn thieves, can't have anything nice.

On topic, we needed the oil. The question I wrestle with is: Should I feel guilty or bad that we invaded like we did, killed so many people, and denied the developing world access to energy they were clearly going to use?

We all love our lifestyle and apparently don't mind if people lied and died to keep it.

Oh and went into tremendous debt as well.

*sigh*

Iraq has over 60% of the world's remaining high quality oil (light sweet crude, the good stuff) and when something is in demand, the price usually goes up. look for higher prices in the future. remember the secret energy meeting cheney had? (right after he took office) the one he didn't want to release any info on? well he finally had to release some of the docs. they were essentially maps of the oil producing regions of Iraq. also read cheney's speech he made to the IEA in 99, before he became VP.
