You might know it would be another "discount" store. People in the Shoals won't buy anything unless it says discount or save in the store name.
Dear Captain Obtuse:
Maybe people in the Shoals think it is stupid to pay 3 times the price for an item just because it has a *label* on it. Maybe many people of the Shoals are more interested in getting out of debt than pretentiousness.
Nobody cares where you shop, Captain O. But why the cheap shot at "the people of the Shoals?" Obviously, you are one. If it pains you so much to live amongst us "rubes," then move to a location where you can shop at your local Publix if it means so much to you.

Most people have lives and aren't really concerned about what variety of items they can buy.
hey, I hope we hear something about it soon.. Last I heard, there was a city council and the members turned down the proposal to build a publix at the location we all heard about, out of fear that it would cause too much traffic in that area... Perhaps something has changed since then.

I'm all for a Publix. People have argued here on td forums for the last two years about a Publix and whether enough people would shop there to keep it opened. The answer is simple. Yes. Athens proved it... If you think the people of Athens are a higher class of citizens that shop at "fancy" grocery stores, than the people of The Shoals.. Then you haven't been to Athens lately.
I'm sorry, the attack on the "shoals" people is 100% correct. Sociologists refer to our society as "chicken tender people." We go to any restaurant, we want chicken fingers and fries. That is actually true. Even the Mexican places offer this. The larger meaning behind this is that the people around are here uncultured, cheap and ignorant of most outside things(I.E. REDNECK.) We dont want food unless its a full meal of old veges and cornbread for 5.99$ from a meat and 3. We expect insane portion sizes for very cheap. If an area restaurant doesn't fill our plates with enough food to satisfy Haiti, we say they are "over priced."

We would rather shop at places like Walmart than a Publix. OMG CHINESE MADE WIRE HANGERS..100 FOR .50 CENTS! OMG! GREAT VALUE SPAGHETTI MADE IN VIETNAM FOR .89 CENTS! OMG BEAUFORD GRAB EM!

We will never have a Starbucks because people are to **** cheap and stupid. Oh sure, 4$ for a latte is a lot you say. However, you don't mind spending an entire weeks check on beer and smokes. God forbid it be new years or the 4th of july. Then you spend a months pay on fireworks.
Has anyone seen the article in today’s paper under Columnists titled, Publix: Worst kept secret in the Shoals? It stated that “At some point during the week, you’ll likely hear the “official” announcement that Publix Super Market is coming to the area”.
Well hooray. At least I won't have to be shopping in the line behind Kissed Grits and some of you other cheap dime store bastards. It's too bad the local leaders want to turn this into a retirement community instead of a thriving area where college graduates can find good paying jobs (or jobs at all) and stay to contribute to taxes which would benefit the entire area.

Looking forward to Publix coming, I am hoping they carry a good selection of choice grade beef, otherwise I will just keep buying bags of chicken tenders at the store if the beef is gonna suck but at the same time it's crazy to not like true bargains. One of the things I like about Publix is their store brand soft drinks, I like them better than Coke or Pepsi and they're CHEAP. At Wal-Mart I buy Great Value spaghetti noodles, why would I not? Wal-Mart & Sam's have deli pizza that rivals most of the restaurants in town and their thin crust is as close to a NY style pizza as I have had outside of Queens.
As for Boogieman's chicken tender thing, the Mexican Restaurants have them on the kids menu, just in case you don't have kids, kids are chicken tender (nugget) people Smiler.
I personally don't care if we get a Starbucks or not, I take my coffee black and love my Kuerig.
As someone who worked at the local Florence Walmart for the better part of the last decade (until 2008), I can say that the management team has went downhill in recent years. Plus, the overall working environment is not exactly conducive to cheerful employees. On the other hand, the employees should still have enough respect for themselves and the customer to be as courteous as possible. The customers definitely make it a challenge sometimes.

As far as the traffic situation, I agree that it is a poorly engineered intersection at Cox Creek/Hough Road, and the entire Hough Road east of Cox Creek is in need of widening. If I remember correctly, one of the columns a few weeks ago about this development said that the entire property will be raised and the access road/entrances "reconfigured". We shall see. I totally understand Publix wanting to be in such a high-traffic area, but I can think of several properties in the immediate area that would have been a better "fit".
Boogieman, we have Starbucks here, I did try them, and IMO anyone that would pay that much for a cup of coffee may not be a redneck but they sure as heck have more money than they have sense. There is nothing at all special or even that good about their coffee or anything else they have to offer. The phrase "there's a sucker born every two minutes" comes to mind.
Dear Captain Oblivious and his limp-wristed crew:

Since you didn't answer my question, I will try again: if it is so repellent for a big cosmopolitan sophisticate like yourself to live amongst the Shoals unwashed, then why don't you move? I'll tell you why. I lived many places and there are people like you everywhere: those who consider themselves superior to their neighbors and the only sad way to manifest their delusion is to shop at places like...well, like Publix. Sad.

Hey, I would never want to get in line behind you either, friend. You are the type that would spend half a day smacking your fishy lips at all the tidbits tempting your ever-so-discriminating palate at the Publix deli, making all those around you miserable with your anal retentive detail to "high quality" snackfood.

Honestly, which is more pathetic: the guy who saves up to buy fireworks to enjoy with his kids and have a great Fourth of July celebration with his family or the pretentious pantywaists who are peeing in their pink drawers in anticipation of a Publix coming to town?

Oh yeah, those college kids can't wait to graduate so they can start their careers behind a Publix cash register or a Starbucks counter. The pleasure of having to wait on poseurs like you guys would only be an extra bonus.
Well if their idea of "high class" is a Publix or Starbucks what can I say. Publix is nice, they do offer gourmet items if you feel like paying three times the price for something you can get somewhere else. On the whole I love Publix because of the quality of their meats, their 2 for the price of one specials, and the variety they have. Their Publix brand foods are as good as any "name brand" and in a lot of cases better. I pass on the $4.69 head of organic lettuce and get the "regular" one. You'll like Publix Kissedgrits, and you don't have to wear your mink and pearls to shop there. I'm with you, if I hated a place as much as some of these say they do, I'd get the h*** outta here. Surely with their sophistication and social graces, not to mention their impeccable manners they could find a job in an area that suits them better.
Hey Jennifer,
I have shopped at Publix several times. I never said it wasn't a good store. My main beef was with these self-important wads who feel the need to take cheap shots at "all the cheap rednecks in the Shoals," themselves excluded, of course, simply because folks may want to save money in order to spend it in other ways. If it's so distasteful to live here, then go. I think the Shoals will actually survive without their wisdom and guidance, regardless of their opinion to the contrary.

What normal person cares where someone else shops? What's it to 'em? Apparently, they can't understand why others aren't as thrilled trolling the Publix frozen food aisle as they are.

What is really funny with these guys is that after Publix is here for a year, they will put their hands on their hips and declare: "Only rednecks go to Publicksth. Why can't we get a Costhco here? What a backward town! Why can't we drink a glass of wine inside Publicksth?"
No, it was used as an example. The people in this area are pathetic. It's not about Publix or starbucks. Its about the general uncouth nature of ther white trash society. Sure, you'd rather save up for 1000$ fireworks while on foodstamps. You yell roll tide while you've never been to college. You moan and complain about restaurants that charge more than 5.99$ a plate. You moan and complain if an establishment doesn't serve "greens" and fried chicken.

You must live in a shi**y area. I'd think if you were so high class and educated you'd have a job that paid enough for you to live in an affluent neighborhood, shop at the better shops, eat at the nicer restaurants, and you wouldn't be in contact with the "lower class". That says a lot to me about YOUR credentials. So you don't have a favorite football team?
As I have a Publix about two blocks away, they get my business.

I really like Wegman's when I lived in DC. Some evenings, we had three varieties of oysters and lamb lolliepops at their in-house cafe. Then bought a bombe at the dessert counter and ate it at their coffee shop. No mink coats, but plenty of white linen shirts and blouses in the summer.
One other take on Publix. I'm glad that another choice will be available for shoppers. Competition can't do anything but help the consumer but competition doesn't always mean prices. Publix, at least the ones I've been in, is a very classy, clean, and well kept store. You can tell that they take pride in their appearance and set a standard for others to strive to meet.

The Publix branded foods are very good quality and the seafood market is always top notch. No matter what the cost competition is Publix will insure that some of the other local stores or chains bring their "A-Game" and most likely will work harder to make their stores competitive.

For some it may be a minor thing or potentially people don't ever go in to check but if you have been to most Foodworlds and Foodlands in town and had to visit the restroom you can tell often how much attention a stores management gives to cleanliness and housekeeping. Here, again, is another area where Publix excels in. Whether it's a new store or one that's been around for a while you don't feel you have to bathe after going in and out of their restrooms and that just isn't the case in many of the other folks stores in town. Clean floors, shelves, seafood, and bakery departments are also indications that give an idea about if a store is more interested in profits or if they care to serve the consumer.

I'm glad we have more selections coming to town as well as the Save a lot that is destined for Muscle Shoals.
