In their wisdom, our Founding Fathers created a system of checks and balances and competing influences among the president and Congress, the states and the federal government, and billionaire liberal donor Tom Steyer.

Tom Steyer isn't Senate majority leader, or chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, or even Senate president pro tem. He's merely the man who wants to spend $100 million on Democrats this year and who hates the Keystone pipeline.

President Barack Obama famously boasted that he has a pen and a phone that give him the power to make Washington act. Except, evidently, if Tom Steyer doesn't want him to.

The hedge fund founded and until recently run by billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer was deeply involved in an alleged Ponzi scheme that siphoned tens of millions of dollars from foreign investors, an analysis of public records shows.

Steyer, the founder and former senior managing partner of Farallon Capital Management, was listed as a top corporate officer of a Farallon fund that was named as a defendant in a 2005 lawsuit filed by those investors.

Other parties allegedly involved in the scheme have since been arrested on charges of financial fraud involving the project that allegedly provided the vehicle for the scheme.

Details of Farallon’s involvement came to light through a civil lawsuit in Texas alleging that Farallon and a number of other individuals and corporate entities were complicit in a scheme to defraud German real estate investors of $67 million.

Farallon’s status as a defendant in the case was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon earlier this week, but newly acquired court documents provide additional details about its alleged involvement.

Farallon denies any wrongdoing, and says it was only tangentially involved in the project. But allegations will likely receive attention as Steyer becomes more active in American politics. He has pledged to raise $100 million to elect environmentalist Democrats to Congress through expenditures by his political group, NextGen Climate Action.

What State Department could you possibly be referring to ?  Obviously not ours.

The Keystone Pipeline is bad for this country. We get NOTHING (except less than 40 permanent jobs) from it, and  a lot of toxic chemicals come out down in Texas.

Only a true Fox devotee could support it.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 61% of Likely U.S. Voters now at least somewhat favor building the major oil pipeline from Canada to Texas, while just 27% are opposed. This includes 37% who Strongly Favor the project and 10% who Strongly Oppose it. Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The pipeline will be approved after the midterm.  Obama is only delaying it so he won't **** off wealthy environmentalist types until he has their money.   Nice of you to carry his water.   He needs more tools like you.

So are we in agreement that we as a nation need to take back our government from corporations and the wealthy? Sounds like some of you are starting to wake up.

Personally I don't see the benefit for Americans in the pipeline project. We have bridges and dams that are falling apart. We need better mass transit. We need better alternative energy sources. All those things would add jobs and improve our lives. An even better idea would be to actually start educating and training Americans for the changes we will inevitably encounter in the coming years. Other countries are investing in jobs training while we are arguing over another fossil fuel project with a very very low ROI. The pipeline is a waste of our time and money.

As far as the Koch brothers pushing for it, and Tom Steyer against it....welcome to the new Corporate States of America. You can thank the right wing Supreme Court members for that and a Congress that has been almost to the person bought and sold to the highest bidder.

This is what I was referring to, SW.  Like most construction projects, not many permanent jobs are created.

  • Building the pipeline will create jobs in the U.S., but not as many as supporters have claimed, and only for a year or two. The U.S. State Department estimates that 42,100 jobs would be added during construction, but that only 50 workers would be required to operate the pipeline.

I wonder how much the Koch brothers are paying Kenny to be for this project. It only makes the US like a person drinking a beer - only the middle man and we won't make anything off of it.
Since all their product will be sold to Asia and SA tax free,,and the profits go to the Canadians , and their Koch Brothers buddies, it would seem to me that except for the billions the Koch's will make , the balance of trade will go to the Canadians,. The US actually has no dog in that fight, except to take all the risk, and keep all the toxic crap taken out of that stuff some call "oil" . That toxic crap is making people in Detroit sick right now as it is being dumped just across the Detroit River in Canada. Do you supporters think that toxic crap is like ' oh well, just dump it in the Gulf of Mexico - won't make much difference with BPs crap still there, maybe no one will n otice.

Old Squirrelly Dawg gives such a marvelous view of the dementia of the progressive mind.  Cliven Bundy lives in Nevada, two states (New Mexico and Arizona) over from Texas.  In another thread, QD thought Nevada bordered on Mexico.  Then, he advocates planned famine for millions of US citizens residing in Texas.  An tactic of the left, similarly, Stalin killed 6 to 8 million in the Ukraine, Mao killed tens of millions and the North Vietnamese about 737,000 of the fellows in the south.  Good company QD keeps.

Seeweed,

Please provide proof that all the refined product will go to China and South America and the means that the refineries will use to avoid paying income taxes on profits from selling the refined products,

The byproduct you refer to is coked coke, one of the least polluting forms of coal, when burned. I am rather mystified why it isn't being offered to Germany, or one of our other export coal customers. Well, that is the Canucks missing a market.  You've made reference to refineries dumping the byproduct in the Gulf.  Please provide where that was done in the recent past, on purpose.

Nice rant!  What most of it has to do with Keystone is beyond me!  Perhaps, if politicians hadn't spent so much of the highway and mass transit trust funds on items having nothing to do with the roads and subways, the proper maintenance might have been done, instead of museums and tourist attractions. But, politicians get most face time from cutting ribbons on new projects and not repaving,, say 2nd street.

We saw the same tragedy with funds supposed to maintain levees and flood pumping stations go to aquariums, etc in New Orleans, before Katrina.

Are the Koch Brothers also paying Warren Buffet to be for the pipeline as well?

This oil is going to be transported regardless of whether this pipeline is approved or not. It will just be done via rail or barge instead.

I've always taken that advice to heart. Just, as I've taken you threats.to Texans.

Well dire how many innocents are you and your texas oil buddies starving to death with oil greed?

People are knifed in the back every day because of Koch greed.  People have to choose between feeding their babies and gas to-work for these b*******. Don’t give me a sermon. You have innocent blood on your hands when you side with these devils.

No one is Texas is starving, except a few models in Dallas.  Yes, the Koch brothers giving $100 million to bulld a new hospital wing is a terrible thing, if the left is to be believed.
