Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach at Florida because of health concerns that came to light when he was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game.

The 45-year-old Meyer resigned Saturday, calling it quits after five seasons in Gainesville and two national titles. He leaves Florida with a 56-10 record that includes a 32-8 mark in league play and a school-record 22-game winning streak snapped early this month against Alabama.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in a statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family."

Meyer is a classy person.

YOU are NOT!

Yeah...I especially liked the way he threw his head phones when all was lost. Now that was class baby! Big Grin
I don't think a class act would keep the best quaterback in a game with a big lead and a possible season ending concussion results. to run up a score, not classy.
And I was NOT passing any kind of judgment- read my statement- coaches tend to tell "fibs" now and then, truth out later. That was the only thing I meant, not to rustle your feathers.
More info:

According to Pete Thamel of the New York Times, Meyer suffered severe chest pains while sleeping after the Alabama game. He was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, “underwent more than nine hours of testing” and was scared for his life. Though he has “suffered from severe chest pains the past two years,” these were particularly frightening according to the story. Meyer continued testing upon returning to Gainesville, FL.

On Christmas Eve, Meyer told his family that he would be resigning. “I saw it as a sign from God that this was the right thing to do,” is how Meyer said he felt when his 18-year-old daughter Nicki was overjoyed to find out he was returning home. “I was worried about letting people down. I was feeling so awful and concerned about my health. That was among several other signs that said it’s time to back away.”

The Coach has a defective heart valve...probably a mitral valve prolapse...can be life threatening. I believe Coach Meyer is/was one of the best...among coaching's elite. I believe he has made the appropriate decision, with several multi-million dollar seasons and some level of employment remaining with Florida, I think they can "struggle" through financially.
Meyer reportedly has long-suffered from an arachnoid cyst. During the SECCG you could even see him grab his head. Stress and excitement can trigger headaches as I understand it. I also read at Tidefans he had a heart valve problem.
I was looking forward to seeing what kind of team they would have had post Tebow with Meyer at the helm. Meyer was the class of the SEC. Did he leave his star QB in too long at times? Yeah I think so, but he was only trying to pad his numbers. The SEC and college football lost a good coach to illness. He may resurface again. Who knows. But I'll miss the rivalry that was growing between him and Saban.
This is Bamafanatics comments on the Urban Meyer thread(S)

Well, it could be considered as a plus for Bama in that there is now no obvious check/balance to total domination for the Tide - depending on who UF hires.
