I've traveled over much of the country -- bad areas and good areas, sometimes very close together.  Upstate  NY has some poverty stricken areas. In the Finger Lakes district and other such areas, I've seen great beauty and tasted wines as good as much more expensive wine in France.  Miami is not a favorite of mine, however, I like Miami Beach, next door.  Love Dallas and Ft Worth, but agree with General Sherman on west Texas.  He stated if he owned Hell and west Texas, he would live in Hell and rent out west Texas.  I do like some of the deserts of New Mexico with the Saguaro cacti and the little pygmy owls that nest in holes of those cacti. Loved to hike in the northern Sangre de Cristi Mts.    Like the north woods of Michigan, but you can keep Detroit.

Dire: That's a lot of traveling! I have been up and down on the eastern side of the US. A lot of good places and some really scary ones as well. I did not like Memphis where I lived for a year. To me the Shoals is it! I have gotten used to the "Your not from around here" question I seem to get all the time. I love the quiet of the area. Well how about a museum for those cars in Cuba? They may become a thing of the past.

I was raised in the Shoals area. Left for the Army for a tour of Nam and Korea, Returned for a year and worked on my MBA at UNA Then, left for Atlanta. Spent most of my career in Atlanta. Moved to Huntsville for six years and returned to the Shoals about 18 months ago.  I'm from around here, but got around, as well.

Dire: I worked in Atlanta for a bit and I really did not like that place! I guess that when you are from a big city it's the last thing that you want as you get a little older. One of my favorite oddities that I enjoy living in the Shoals is listening to the locals complain about traffic. Gotta love this little place!

Agreed, the traffic here is ridiculously light compared to any large city.  However, some of the traffic light patterns in Florence appear to be designed by a traffic manager whose seeing eye dog had cataracts.
