From a headline in the TD: visitors to Lauderdale spent $210 million in 1year.

To all the naysayers that complained about or disparaged  the Tower, the Marriott, the convention center, golf courses, softball fields, bass tournaments, and a host of other related topics - STFU.

The Tower, before its rescue by RSA, was deserving of disparagement.  It never paid a penny of its bonded indebtedness from revenues as its proponents had claimed it would. Its "world class" restaurants, pre-RSA, were a flop. Opponents of building the golf courses on the TVA land that for decades has been a prime local outdoor recreation area had a valid reason to oppose that venture.  They did not object to siting of the golf courses where they eventually were built.-The golf course proponents had long insisted that he TVA land was the ONLY viable place to build them, but that obviously proved to be wrong.

"he who"?

The tower was rescued.  I believe it is now a viable venue, and also an alternate graphic symbol for Florence herself.  As for the golf courses, besides the problem with the original siting, what I mainly heard was along the lines of "why do we need golf courses?  I don't play no golf".  And then there was "why do we need a five star hotel?  I ain't gonna stay there."  Not to be outdone by the idiots who claimed, "we don't need no softball fields, nobuddy plays softball 'roun here."   - Just STFU.

They are talking about a tennis complex, now.  We should embrace that also.  We should also be talking about an aqua-sports complex.  But the naysayers will say, "Why  we gonna spend money on tennis courts?  We don't need none of that, and what's wrong with the ones we have?   Swimming, I can just go swim in the river whenever I want.  We don't need none of that."   - Just STFU

$12 million in additional spending - to say nothing of the taxes generated.  The naysayers have been proven wrong.  STFU.

Not sure if this includes the lodging cost or not. if it does my figure will be off and need to be redone. I would really have to see all the figures on this. 210 million in Lauderdale cty? Correct me, as I could very well be wrong but would that not equal nearly 18 million dollars in taxes collected just from the tourism. If Florence keeps 4% of the taxes, that means around 8 million dollars that Florence keeps in tax money. Maybe since tourism tax money is generated by tourism, maybe this tax money each year should be put back into providing more things to draw tourism and not put the money in the general city fund. I have suggested several events or displays to draw tourism but the department heads and mayor just brush them off saying they only care about drawing tourism for golf and the Frank Lloyd Wright house.
