A 29-year-old man saved numerous lives during Tennessee Waffle House shooting, police say

NASHVILLE — A 29-year-old man credited with saving numerous lives Sunday morning after he disarmed a man who opened fire on a Tennessee Waffle House said he was just trying to stay alive.

James Shaw Jr. said he saw an opportunity to tackle the man shooting into an Antioch Waffle House after feeling cornered. He said he doesn’t feel like a hero.

Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters Sunday morning that the Waffle House hero rushed the suspected shooter, disarmed him and threw the assault rifle he was carrying over the Waffle House counter.

“I don’t really know, when everyone said that, it feels selfish,” Shaw Jr. said. “I was just trying to get myself out. I saw the opportunity and pretty much took it.”

Here again the more you read the more you find out that this could have been prevented.  Now the Father of this mental idiot is going to have to justify why he gave the guns and weapons back to his son after they were taken away.  Then other times he was stopped obviously demonstrating there were some mental problems there.

In the same area where he attacked the Waffle House patrons and employees he stole a BMW and was chased but police opted to call off the chase account of traffic and track it by GPS Locator but after finding the BMW at the apartments that he was living at they didn't find him.  Had the chase continued it's possible he would have been in jail and wouldn't have had the opportunity to do the killing.  I know people can Monday morning quarterback any and all situations but you just know there will be those coming out of the woodwork claiming that guns need to be removed from people's hands.  In this case, this individual I AGREE He never needed to have a gun and procedures were taken to ensure he wasn't able to purchase one and those he had was taken away only to be returned by his father.   I now wonder if the father will be under scrutiny and if he may be somehow liable in the future for actions he took.  If anyone was in the position to know this kid had mental issues it was his own family.

From what the guy who disarmed him said he did get in some fist to his face/body before he got away.  Here again calls for removing guns when there is ample number of events that could have happened to have prevented this.

This is an individual who is mental and should not have been walking around.  Maybe now he will never have an opportunity to kill again.  I'm waiting to hear why the father thought it ok to return his guns to him when he told the police he wouldn't do that.

I'm thinking the father now may share in some of the blame, possibly rightfully so.

I have a CCP and usually have my weapon with me these days and although I don't believe I'd have any problem using it for protection of myself, my family, or others it is the last thing I would ever want to have to do.  Something I would try to avoid at all cost.  Some people though have no care or feeling about human life.  Sadly!
