This Sunday is Palm Sunday- the last Sunday of lent, and a solemnity feast of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As He rode into Jerusalem, people waved palm branches before him. This tradition remains today, as we all hold up palms in commemoration of Jesus entrance into Jerusalem, before His arrest.
If anyone has a chance in the shoals area to experience Palm Sunday, it is beautiful. Holy Week masses are Thursday( the feast of the Lords supper and foot washing)
Good Friday is a beautiful service in which we venerate the cross- a very touching and solemn service. No dry eyes.
Saturday the Easter vigil begins, starting with a fire, and the church in total darkness. Candles are light from the fire, and a beautiful service follows. Of course, Sunday, we celebrate the Risen Lord.
Check local listings if you are interested- the Easter triduum is a beautiful way to immerse yourself in the Passion and resurrection of our Lord.

Last fall I bought a small palm tree at the library in LA and planted it in my yard at my place on the coast. My cross the street neighbor , whose son is a priest, ventured over and commented on the palm tree I had just planted. Said it was (I believe) a Sago Palm, and that the Catholics use the fonds form that type of palm tree for the Palm Sunday ritual, and they are saved , and burned next year and the ashes are used for Ash Wednesday ritual.

I had never heard that, but found it very interesting. Vplee, does that jibe with what you know about the rituals?

Yes- the palms can be burned and used for ashes...it's really a beautiful thing to see how it all goes full circle. I think the palms left in churches get burned for the next Ash Wednesday. We typically take them home and then dispose of them later. The palms, once blessed, have to be disposed of in a proper way- so used for ashes, buried, or kept in the home.

When I lived in Florida near some publicly-owned land, a crew would come through in late winter/early spring, trespassing onto public property and cutting and bundling palm fronds.  I stopped and asked one of them what he was doing and he 'splained it to me:  "We just cuttin' these palm leaves to send to the yankee Catholics up nawth for Palm Sunday."  In at least that instance, a lot of palm fronds used at "Easter" were stolen from public lands and sold for profit by crackers who had no respect for property rights and who probably had little or no respect for Catholic yankees other than as a source of income.

I have lived in the South all my life and have never ever heard anyone pronounce north as "nawth" except in cheesy movies, or books where they had no idea how to "copy" the sound of a Southern accent. I always got a kick out of tv series that would have their "heroes" travel about 50 miles outside of new york and suddenly be in a town that was full of, supposedly, "country hicks" that pronounced words like that.

So, they were doing something illegal yet had no problem chatting with you?  Did they have less respect for catholics than you? That's hard to believe. And lastly, how is selling palm fronds to catholics a sign of disrespect??

So, they were doing something illegal yet had no problem chatting with you?  Yes, they had no problem chatting with me, since I did not approach them in any kind of intimidating way.  I asked my question in a friendly way and they resonded in kind.  Try it sometime.  Did they have less respect for catholics than you? And just how much of my alleged disrespect for Catholics have you detected on your disrespect meter?  INVICTUS' numerous insults routinely posted on this forum constitute some of the most disrespectful content to be found here, but you selectively avoid any criticism of his grossly disrespectful posts.  That's hard to believe. And lastly, how is selling palm fronds to catholics a sign of disrespect?? It is disrespectful for anyone engaged in commerce to sell illegally obtained goods of any kind to persons who, if they knew the source of such good, would not have bought them. I doubt that many Catholics would feel comfortable knowing they were buying stolen goods in preparation for a religious observance. But these frond rustlers do not divulge their sources,of supply, you may be sure.

I don't blame invictus for  anything he says to you. Maybe all the others give you a pass, but he takes offense and lets you know it. I doubt you've ever approached anyone in a friendly way, much less someone you, for some reason only you know, think are inferior to you and are doing something you don't approve of. As for your "devastating" (in your mind) response-LOL-really dude? You couldn't "devastate" me on my worse and your best day.  You're full of it and yourself too.
