Your professor might have acquired a lot of WISDOM along the way as he/she read and critiqued DISSERTATION after DISSERTATION and he/she just might think that correct spelling counts for something!

I remain truly curious as to which words in my posts have sent (or would have sent) you to the dictionary. You have accused me of using such words, but you seem not to be able to list a single one--not yet, anyway. Perhaps you will find one here.

You say "it's just ironic that you call Sassy out when you created a thread to do exactly to him what you are mad that he did to you...." Well, not exactly, Ms. Chik. You see, Sassy initiated this little grammar war by INCORRECTLY accusing me of an error. My response, by contrast, showed him clearly and CORRECTLY(from independent sources) that he was dead wrong in his interpretation of the matter. There IS a difference between a gratuituous and blundering assertion (such as Sassy made) and a scholarly and well documented rebuttal (which I provided). Thus, I believe you will agree, your choice of "exactly" to characterize our respective contributions is not "exactly" on target.

All right, Sassy, you may come back on here and do two predictable things:

(1) whoop and croak about my violation of my pledge to forego further discussion of this issue. You do need some kind of comfort, given the heavy polemical bombardment I have dislodged upon your piteous efforts at grammar-sharping. Ms. Chik's chiding post was just too tempting for me to resist. It provided yet another opportunity to enlighten someone whose discernment (not to mention spelling) is in need of an upgrade.

(2) unburden yourself of any of a variety of irrelevant insults, that tactic being the one you are most skilled in. Play to your "strength."

Get your nose down out of the air. I hear it might rain today, and you could drown.

You can't help but try pitifully to get the last word in, can you? Your ego is such that it could only be fully expressed on such a forum as we have here...anywhere else on line you would be banned in a heartbeat. And I'm certain that that same ego, if expressed in person, would drive any potential audience, nay...any acquaintance, away.

BTW, I need no allowance or permission from you to post as I see fit concerning your shortcomings and failures. Big Grin

Trouble is, you found NO shortcoming in the grammar you sought vainly and laughably to correct. In your ignorance, you interpreted a "shortcoming" that just was not there. Then, even after being shown irrefutable proof that you were WRONG, you refused to acknowledge your proven error and forthwith abandoned any efforts toward substantive discussion of the matter. Instead, you took the cheap and cowardly route--you started slinging ad hominum insults and have continued consistently to embrace that polemically impotent tactic. Truly pitiful!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should just repeat my last post on this topic...it would answer your latest diatribe just as well as the one before.

If I throw a stick will you go away? I suspect not Big Grin Your ego won't let you Wink

I have no trouble with anyone finding fault with what I post when there is actual fault to find, but the "fault" alleged by Unclassy Sassy was no fault at all, as amply proven by me and as further evidenced by Unclassy Sassy's utter inability to respond with anything other than stonewalling and insults.

As to the shallow and transparent contrivance "explaining" your own misspelled words ("Guess it would shock you to know that I saw the misspelled words and left them as they were because I knew you wouldn't be able to help yourself...."), all I can say is that this falls into the same classification as "The dog ate my homework." Your attempt at post hoc salvage is flat-out laughable!
bitternU, there is more to wit and wisdom than the proficient use of a dictionary. I did not major in English. If it makes you feel better I will gladly admit that you are way smarter than me in grammer, spelling, and English. In the subjects of general understanding and common sense I'll take you on anyday. As far as my self-assumed role as a judge of Christian character I was just as shocked as everyone on here to learn that you were a deacon and Sunday school teacher. I'm a Christian but not a Bible scholar. I was taught in Sunday school that a Christian should bear certain fruits. Judging your posts I did not see any Christian fruits. As far as your Christian character that is between you and God but I would have expected better posts from you. Elite condescending better than you attitude is NOT a Christian trait.

Nor did I major in English, but when I was in school, that subject was thoroughly taught and I was blessed with very competent teachers all through my stellar academic career. Why, we even diagrammed sentences! Imagine that! I understand that to be pretty much a lost art in most of the schools of today.

Did you take a poll of all the other forum participants in order to reach your conclusion that "everyone on here" was shocked? Surely, you must have queried "everyone" before reaching your conclusion re the unanimity of amazement that you so confidently assert! That must have required a lot of effort on your part.

My Bible urges Christians to "Prove all things; hold fast to that which is good."(I Thessalonians 5:21) The writer of Proverbs sagely advises, "Buy the truth and sell it not." (Proverbs 23:23)

When something is proven beyond any reasonable dispute, folks should not continue to argue to the contrary; they should "hold" to that which is proven instead of doggedly denying it and resorting to name-calling and insults. To do otherwise shows a certain shortfall of Christian character, don't you think?

The verse you cite, Romans 12:16 tells us to "Be of the same mind one to another." But we can not be of the same mind if one embraces truth and the other embraces and defends error. I defend the truth; Sassy defends error. Shall I concede to error? "To say conform to me seems strange; If Christ conforms, will Caesar change?" (D. Crenshaw, circa 1959)

You obviously ignored the last sentence of the verse. Here it is for you:

King James Version: Be not wise in your own conceits.

New International Version: Do not be conceited.

Get back to me when you can honestly claim to not be conceited.

You obviously ignored the last sentence of the verse. Here it is for you:

King James Version: Be not wise in your own conceits.

New International Version: Do not be conceited.

Get back to me when you can honestly claim to not be conceited.

I'm BACK!

Here is a definition you should ponder:

Conceited: too proud: having or showing an excessively high opinion of your own qualities or abilities.

I honestly believe that my opinion concerning my own qualities and abilities is not "excessively high"; thus I, not being conceited, RETURN, per your directive. Happy now?

As to the verse you say I have "ignored," allow me to point out that ignoring is something you yourself have demonstrated in your above "response" to what I posted. You IGNORED everything I posted. You did not even marginally touch upon any of it.

Now, as to the part that I did not very specifically address, I suggest that before blithely invoking scripture on the assumption that its meaning serves your ends, you might do a little study in the Word. The noted commentator, Albert Barnes discusses this part of the verse thusly:

"The meaning is 'Do not trust in the conceit of your own superior skill and understanding, and refuse to hearken to the counsel of others.'"

Another reknowned commentator, Matthew Henry, explicates it this way:

"As a means to promote this, he adds, Be not wise in your own conceits; to the same purport with v. 3. [v. 3 here provided for convenient reference--beternU: 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.]We shall never find in our hearts to condescend to others while we find there so great a conceit of ourselves: and therefore this must needs be mortified. Me ginesthe phronimoi par heautois—"Be not wise by yourselves, be not confident of the sufficiency of your own wisdom, so as to despise others, or think you have no need of them (Prov. iii. 7), nor be shy of communicating what you have to others. We are members one of another, depend upon one another, are obliged to one another; and therefore, Be not wise by yourselves, remembering it is the merchandise of wisdom that we profess; now merchandise consists in commerce, receiving and returning."

It is in that very spirit that I enter these forums, contributing and receiving in the "commerce" of counsel and wisdom. The "merchandise of wisdom" is not a thing to be sequestered, but to be shared.

Thus, I await the sharing that you DID NOT accomplish, in your initial declination to respond to the substantive matters you ignored in my post, above.

Some one should have pity on YOU for the way you repeatedly dodge the substance of issues raised here and instead take recourse to amateur psychology and religious inquisition. Simply castigating what I posted as a "trail of drivel" does not make it so, and if you disagree with that, then it is YOU who have an ego and conceit problem, expecting others to give credibility your bald and unsupported conclusion on its own "merits" (which are essentially nonexistent).

It seems that it is YOU who keep this dialog going, what with your continuing failure to acknowledge you are wrong when it is so clearly obvious that you are, all the while hounding me about alleged failings of Christian character. Why don't you try to salvage at least some teeny, tiny crumb of credibility by browsing back over the many points I have raised that you have ignored and trying to crank up enough brain power to form up some kind of actual response?
It bears repeating:

Once again, predictably and BORINGLY, you resort to anything but substance. You are truly polemically crippled up so badly that you can not muster even a nanoparticle of credible argumentation. Go pound sand or watch paint dry or do anything else that is more productive than your miserable performance here.

Your current ego trip hasn't produced any wit or wonders yet. All you've done is expounded upon your alleged vocabulary and your alleged expertise in grammar...neither of which have been proven...only alleged, by you. Big Grin

I think I'll hang around. There might be a few more threads I'd comment on. Who knows, I might feel the need to point you out as our resident egomaniac for some newcomers. Wink

I submit, below, for the edification of any newcomers, a comment I posted earlier and that assy has somehow seen fit to describe thusly:

"All you've done is expounded upon your alleged vocabulary and your alleged expertise in grammar...neither of which have been proven...only alleged, by you."

Now, THAT is how Sassy describes such of my posts as THIS:

<<<<"I'm BACK!

Dear "newcomer," I will let YOU decide whether Sassy has properly characterized the content of my posts or whether he/she is simply blowing irrelevant smoke to conceal his/her demonstrated failure to frame substantive and relevant responses.

It's your call, newcomer, not Sassy's. He/she/it has demonstrated such a woeful paucity of discernment as to clearly be ineligible to resolve the matter.

Another "underly"-wordy evasion of real debate by the ever-dodging and slithering Sassy! I ma wrong, he/she/it asserts, but without any sppecificity or explication. Please, Oh please--do more than tell me that I am wrong or that I am conceited or egotistical. Am I wrong, for example, in my repeated observation that you have failed to make substantive responses to many things I have posted? I think the written record shows clearly that YOU ARE WEASELING AWAY from even attempting to answer what I post, preferring to take the low road of insult and frivolity. Why don't you try to surprise us all and submit a real answer or two to some of the many detailed responses that I have graciously offered in response to you? Or are your intellectual resources so strained that you can not put out more than 40 or 50 words at a time without fatigue setting in?

No. But it is a slight improvement. Now let's practice losing the attitude and pretending you're a real human instead of letting your egomania run amuck. Perhaps there's hope for you yet! Big Grin
