As to any use of the dictionary, Tenn, Let me assure you that I very seldom have recourse to that aid. You, like all too many vocabulary-compromised people on these forums, cavalierly assume that anyone whose vocabulary exceeds your meager one must stay glued to a dictionary to dredge up new words with which to attempt to impress others. The problem is one of your limitations, not of my capabilities.

There, do you feel better now Oh Holy One.

Why in the h*** should I have to press "1" for English? [QUOTE]

ferrellj, to simply post a definition by no means demonstrates in the least its applicability to the object of your scorn. Your polemic insufficiency is the only thing demonstrated by such an ineffectual tactic.

What IS demonstrated in the last line of your post, your favorite, ever present tag line ("Why in the h*** should I have to press "1" for English?") is a choice of wording that seems way out of character with your self-assumed role as a judge of Christian character. What would Jesus say?

The pic needs a caption: Hi! I'm a sweet little sleeping baby! I have no relevance whatsoever to the discussion begun and skillfully pursued by the noble beternU(whom I greatly admire!). When I grow up, I hope to be INTELLECTUALLY grown up so that I will not stoop to the insult, subterfuge, and irrelevance resorted to by those on this forum who enjoin battles of wits with beternU but who enter the fray only half equipped!

Wow! The depth and substance of your post are flat-out remarkable--remarkably weak and pitiful, that is!

Since you used "post" in a singular sense, rather that "posts" as a plural, shouldn't that be "your post is flat-out remakable"? Big Grin

Decidedly and unequivocally not! Ths compound subject of the sentence is "depth and substance." "[o]f your post" is a prepositional phrase. In the English language, as in others that rise above the level of gutteral grunts, it is the subject and verb that must agree; the prepositional phrase is a bystander with no say in the matter. My compound subject agrees with its verb "depth and substance...are").

It will not do to grammar-sharp me unless you know your stuff, Sassy. In this case, you don't. Off to remedial English with you!!!

But it's so much fun, and I get such a rise out of you. Wink I think I'll tease again later Big Grin

BTW, I disagree. Depth and substance are both singular, and are not indicated as a plural possession, but as the attributes of the singular subject, the "post". Perhaps a little remedial English is in order for you Roll Eyes

You are persisting in your error in the face of all that the experts say concerning this aspect of subject/verb agreement.

http://www.towson.edu/ows/moduleSVAGR.htm

"SUBJECT-VERB RULE #1 – Two or more singular (or plural) subjects joined by and act as a plural compound subject and take a plural verb (singular + singular = plural).

You can check the verb by substituting the pronoun they for the compound subject."

See also : http://grammarstars.blogspot.c...eement-part-iii.html

"post" most assuredly is NOT a "subject," it is the object of the preposition "of" in the prepositional phrase "of your post." Struggle as you might, you can not rescue yourself from your pedantic error in your muddled and misguided attempt to "correct" my grammar.

Yep--Good at stonewalling and creating meaningless deflections from the issue under discussion. Admit it--your inept little foray into grammar sharping has been exposed twice for the laughable folly that it is, as amply demonstrated by your total failure to submit any kind of credible, to-the-point rebuttal to the definitive material I posted in decisive support of my argument. Finding an extra "h" in one word of my post in no way vindicates your silly defense of your farcical foray into the realm of correct English usage. But, having failed so miserably in the real subject at issue, I suppose you find some small comfort in dealing with minutiae. Such is the refuge of the incompetent. You might be Sassy, but you sure ain't classy.
I hate having to use a dictionary just to understand someone's post...no offense, BeternU -- I think you have some good points, but with this thread you completely make me want to put you on ignore because who cares if you mispelled a word and who cares if Sassy corrected -- you do it to other people all the time...I guess that is the whole point of this thread though -- some people can dish it out but when it comes back they can't take it. I don't even know what the original "arguement" was supposed to be, but most people don't really care either...You and Sassy both are great assets to this forum...why are you letting this get to you so badly?

It is not about a misspelled word. It is about a fundamental element of correct English usage, namely that verbs and subjects must agree. Sassy alleged that I had made an error of subject-verb agreement. Sassy was dead wrong. I demonstrated, using outside reference sources, that the error was Sassy's, not mine. Sassy, more than once, doggedly refused to respond to the substance of what I posted, electing instead to reiterate his/her original error and to sling snarky and irrelevant canards. I hereby discontinue all future discussion of this topic with Sassy, you, or others, having enjoyed a sumptuous lunch courtesy of Sassy and--as regards Sassy--having no patience remaining to suffer fools gladly or otherwise.

I am truly curious as to which words in my posts have sent (or would have sent) you to the dictionary. I do not believe I have lately used words that would mystify or intimidate most persons on this forum, yourself included, considering your past posts.

The experts to which I referred did not include myself. Had you actually read the thread, you would have known that. There IS a proper role and use for expertise. I drew upon expertise outside any competence I might have asserted in the matter in dispute. That expertise vindicated my position and wiped out the Sassy and stubborn one's. End of story. Your attempted cuteness is not cute or otherwise impressive except as an indicator of your ignorance.

My statement was intended to apply only to my commentary back to you. I did not make that plain, I fear. Dixie and unclegus apparently have not been tracking your inanities and my pearls of wisdom and I thought it useful to enlighten them. In truth, I find it very difficult to maintain my intent to cease dialogue with YOU, since your pathetic attempts to save face strongly invite withering comment back from the potent pen of beternU! I shall stiffen my resolve, though, and try to avoid further wasting of my sweetness upon the desert air.

Pearls you have but I wouldn't go so far as to add the wisdome part. BeternU -- you use words in "conversation" that I would only use in my disertation -- that is what I mean by having to go to the dictionary. You don't talk or converse, you dictate like a college professor that wants to sound more smart than he really is. I have no doubt you are smart, but you give me a headache with the wordiness of your "arguments". Like I said, I really don't care, I was trying to make you realize that this is not an "issue" that the world cares about and you could have addressed Sassy in a PM to correct, but instead you wanted it to be a snarky thread for you to thump your chest and claim "King of the Forums" or something...no need to explain...it's just ironic that you call Sassy out when you created a thread to do exactly to him what you are mad that he did to you. Just because you aren't making comments like "you are such a *****" and using big words doesn't mean you aren't being just as much of a jerk...I'm just saying...Big Grin forest ... trees...

Merry Christmas!!!
Dixie--

As you draw upon the resources of your "wisdome" to finish your "disertation," be sure to do a spell-check of your text. Your professor might have acquired a lot of WISDOM along the way as he/she read and critiqued DISSERTATION after DISSERTATION and he/she just might think that correct spelling counts for something!

I remain truly curious as to which words in my posts have sent (or would have sent) you to the dictionary. You have accused me of using such words, but you seem not to be able to list a single one--not yet, anyway. Perhaps you will find one here.

You say "it's just ironic that you call Sassy out when you created a thread to do exactly to him what you are mad that he did to you...." Well, not exactly, Ms. Chik. You see, Sassy initiated this little grammar war by INCORRECTLY accusing me of an error. My response, by contrast, showed him clearly and CORRECTLY(from independent sources) that he was dead wrong in his interpretation of the matter. There IS a difference between a gratuituous and blundering assertion (such as Sassy made) and a scholarly and well documented rebuttal (which I provided). Thus, I believe you will agree, your choice of "exactly" to characterize our respective contributions is not "exactly" on target.

All right, Sassy, you may come back on here and do two predictable things:

(1) whoop and croak about my violation of my pledge to forego further discussion of this issue. You do need some kind of comfort, given the heavy polemical bombardment I have dislodged upon your piteous efforts at grammar-sharping. Ms. Chik's chiding post was just too tempting for me to resist. It provided yet another opportunity to enlighten someone whose discernment (not to mention spelling) is in need of an upgrade.

(2) unburden yourself of any of a variety of irrelevant insults, that tactic being the one you are most skilled in. Play to your "strength."

Get your nose down out of the air. I hear it might rain today, and you could drown.

You can't help but try pitifully to get the last word in, can you? Your ego is such that it could only be fully expressed on such a forum as we have here...anywhere else on line you would be banned in a heartbeat. And I'm certain that that same ego, if expressed in person, would drive any potential audience, nay...any acquaintance, away.

BTW, I need no allowance or permission from you to post as I see fit concerning your shortcomings and failures. So, your magnanimous posting that I "may" come back on here is of absolutely no consequence, except to further masturbate your dangerously overgrown ego.

Regardless of your being right or wrong about your pet peeve of grammar and composition, you're still an insufferable boor, with loutish social skills. And one who fails to do what they say, to boot. Big Grin

Trouble is, there was NO shortcoming in the grammar you sought vainly and laughably to correct. In your ignorance, you interpreted a "shortcoming" that just was not there. Then, even after being shown irrefutable proof that you were WRONG, you refused to acknowledge your proven error and forthwith abandoned any efforts toward substantive discussion of the matter. Instead, you took the cheap and cowardly route--you started slinging ad hominum insults and have continued consistently to embrace that polemically impotent tactic. Truly pitiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
