First the link to this sizable PDF file which is an entire book discussing the man and his ministry.

This circuit-riding preacher used to stay with my grandparents when he was in their town , and they passed on to my dad and me stories that were true of things described in this book. He also preached out here at "Old Brick Church" and around Leighton.

I was wondering first if any of you have ever heard of him, and second what do you think of his "gift" ?

Hi Seeweed,

Rather than have anyone wade through a 216 page book in Adobe; why don't you tell us about this man and why he should interest us.

Then, we can comment.

Regarding a "sleeping preacher" -- there are many whom I thought must be sleeping, during their sermon. And, there are others whom I would prefer they be somewhere sleeping instead of being in the pulpit.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Don't know Stribling, but this is a guy who was a Presbyterian Preacher, born and buried in Scottsboro, who would go into a trance and could see things going on all over the country, possibly all over the world.
Folks would ask him about their parents and family back in Va, or N.C. and he could accurately tell them what was going on, baby born, parent dead etc. No phones and slow mail in those days.

People would also ask him where they had lost some item, like a watch, and he could tell them.

Once, while he was at my grandparents house, he was in one of his trances, and he told them Ms. (somebody) was bringing him some soup, but oops, she was going over a stile in a fence and dropped it. Sure enough , she showed up at the house and told that had happened just like he had said.
Dad's stories went on and on, can't remember them all.
I actually bought this book back in '87 and read it. Found it last year on the internet.
The book I bought also included some pictures of places he preached, and houses he stayed in (including my grandparents) which were not in the original presented here, so at least I got a little something extra for my money.

I think this is really a fascinating story, and next cold spell, some of you may be looking for something interesting to read , try this book - don't cost anything.

T. S. Stribling won the Pulitzer Prize for "The Store". Stribling is responsible for a powerful trilogy, "The Forge", "The Store" and "Unfinished Cathedral"...they should be read in that order because that is the chronological progression and follows the same characters lives. These books were classified as fiction but so accurately paralleled the lives of a prominent and powerful LOCAL family that they retaliated against him with such pressure that he was forced to move from this area. The setting for all three books is the Shoals area. I highly recommend this trilogy.
Yes..that's him. Stribling used him as an important part of the plot in one of his books. The three run together in my mind, so I can't tell you which book.

Read up on Stribling, then read the trilogy. It is fun to read about the people living on Pine Street, or going out to Gravelly Springs.

People were mad at Stribling for years because they said he based his characters on citizens of florence. Eventually, he was reconciled with the city (the Pulitzer didn't hurt!)

A lot of people don't know there's a UNA grad with a Pulitzer for fiction. I think they should do a class on him.

I posted before reading Sheldivr. Didn't mean to be repetitive. Later Sribling said he didn't base anyone on that 'powerful family'. But I have also read that the patriarch of that family also got started in business with ill gotten gains, the same as Milt Vaiden in the book.
