Some of them can send messages without even seeing the keypad. I have witnessed a message sent while the phone was in a kid's pocket. He used the texting "language", and did not have any typing errors. I remember a few high school kids getting caught cheating on exams by this method a year or so ago.
Of course, it's a little hard to read a text message without looking at the screen.
