Yeap, it could have been Johnny Hood or Dewitt Dawson. I have the book the STATE LINE MOB by W.R. Morris. He also wrote THE TWELFTH of AUGUST. He does not go into who killed Buford Pusser but it is a good read. Those were the good old day's.

I was up in Adamsville, TN a couple of weeks ago and I stopped in at the Buford Pusser home and museum. I wanted to purchase a copy of Walking Tall(the first one) but they didn't have any copies due to a law suit. The will get 20 copies after the first of the year. They are also making a new Walking Tall that will star the guy that play's Hercules.
