My house was built before there WERE unions.
I am conflicted about unions. I realize that there used to be a need for them, and I think if they were abolished, things might start sliding backward, and the working people might again be taken advantage of.
On the other hand, I think that unions, just like most everything else, have become just another big business. I mean, I think the workers are now (in some cases) being taken advantage of by the unions.
An example: I once applied for a job at a store that had a union. It paid minimum wage to start, and after ONE YEAR of employment, I would be offered benefits. I went down the street to a non-union competitor, and was offered above minimum wage to start, with benefits kicking in after 90 days.
Now, I know not all unions are like that, and I still think in some professions, unions are still accomplishing a lot for workers.
As I said, I am conflicted about the whole subject.
