tennis courts
I am against the tennis courts, however just read about the cost and where will the money come from. What happen to the gas tax money for Veterans park improvement? The tax went into effect when the hotel and golf courses came in. As far as I know it is still being charged and has not gone away (as was the concern when powers to be started charging it). Are we being mislead again? did they use the money for other things? I wish I could go to the council meeting and ask. Maybe the Times Daily...

Bronner, conference center, gas tax
paper says Bronner wants the two million in fund for park. Paper also says some of the tax went to construction of hotel? It has been 12 years and only 2 million in tax? Bronner got the conference center for $1 a year, he can pay for work on it. There should be an audit on the tax money and how it has been handled. Some how I think we have been misled. Remember Bronner works for the rich State employee retirement fund. He doesn't care about the people. I remember him wanting the senate to...

tax increase?
wow a tax increase without explanation of where money is going? Florence doesn't have a tax challenge, they have a spending challenge. there is buying population over 300,000 in Florence. So I would think there would be plenty of tax money. Why do politicians think it is monopoly money and they can just keep spending our money?

surprising there isn't more outrage on this... car salespeople love tax time, so many people get back more than they put in and head to get that car. plus this is just illegals,,, think of how much when you add in legals

Plenty are outraged, but just like with illegals voting and getting welfare, the left denies it happens.

Crank that doesn't make sense,,, shouldn't we be concerned with both? shouldn't IRS challenge be an easy fix? I would think that both left and right would want these challenges corrected. or does hate blind you? I don't know how many times I see someone's "come back" is to say something is worse rather than what could be done...

Republicans keep feeding you the line of 'crisis at the border' and you keep buying it. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has lost enough money to cover 1/4 of the National Debt.

If so, Treasury will borrow from the Part A surplus, and issue bonds as they've done for years. The surplus is predicted to last until 2029 per the 2017 Trustees report. BTW, SS no longer has a surplus to borrow.

Re: tennis courts
I would like to see an economic study before building such a large facility (31 courts). Its like the ag center. Looks like its going to be a concert hall. The state has to support the ag centers that are already in existence. I do like the idea of the small center to marry up jobs with skills. The federal courts just gave Alabama a big bill to improve the prison system. Taxes will probably go up. If Alabama neglects the order, the court will seize state revenue and make the improvements,...

Re: tennis courts
That's what I was thinking, 31 would be a great deal of overhead, unless some of the courts were easily converted to basketball at times, then rent the court for the pick up games.

Re: tennis courts
Perhaps a family member or friend can attend the meeting for you and you can give them your questions to ask the council for you. Also, let them voice record the questions and the answers using a smart phone. Be sure to put the phone in airplane mode, so you don’t get a call while voice recording. Just point the microphone toward the person speaking. Later they can download the recording to a computer to share the voice file with you. Too bad a boat launch for access to Wilson lake can’t be...

I can't go because of work. The big question is what happen to the money from the gas tax? When retirement came in and built the Marriott and two golf courses and the conference center was given to them for $1. There was a gas tax put in place for the Shoals. Is it still in place? how much has it generated? where is the money? Was this another shell game?

Re: tennis courts
A 31 court tennis complex is an ultra high maintenance operation. They'd need a number of employees properly trained to keep up the place--and a marketing person to get tournaments in. Courts have to be resurfaced every few years at a cost of $15K per court--pushing $500K combined. We don't have enough tennis players to fully utilize the current courts in town. What are they going to do with the other tennis courts--they wouldn't need? The tennis complex would be a boondoggle--paid for by...

Re: tennis courts
Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and wood or composite paddles about twice the size of ping pong paddles. No where to play around here that I know of...so we laid out our own court in the yard for the kids to choose between badminton or Pickleball.

Re: Bronner, conference center, gas tax
I would hope that any and all large projects funded by Tax increases would have a separate and independent audit from an independent group. If such is done then it should be available or made available to the public. If there is not that process in place then I agree it should be in place to insure that what was funded was spent as it should have been.

Re: Bronner, conference center, gas tax
Let's give Bronner his $2 million, but only if he retires and goes to the house. He made some real bone headed investments with the RTC golf courses that are not being utilized, the Wise capital loan and worst of all--the Barton rail car complex. So far, he's gotten out by the skin of his teeth, but the Barton complex is far from paying off. The truth is that the man was given too much authority to make investments without oversight. And he did a bunch of dumb stuff. It's time for him to...

Politics is similar to college Football (and in many ways some Private Industry Companies) where when you fail you get to leave with a Golden Parachute. I think every industry and group has those people that are paid far beyond their capabilities or abilities. In the company that I worked for, for so many years ,things were great until they put certain people in high decision making positions where they could personally profit from bad decisions. The real unfortunate thing was that the bad...

Re: Bronner, conference center, gas tax
The city really doesn't have a choice. The money was placed in reserve for an attraction to be built, and it hasn't been. Of course, the city could sue the RSA, but there's really no grounds and it would just make Florence look worse, plus antagonizing Bronner.

Re: Bronner, conference center, gas tax
I know. I just wanted to get my message across that Bronner really screwed up on the golf courses--big, big losing propositions. He got out of Wise by the skin of his teeth, and the Barton complex is not yet out of the woods. Navistar bet the company on a non DEF heavy truck engine that failed, and the first blip in the truck business and they're out of business.

Re: Bronner, conference center, gas tax
sorry to hear the golf courses are losing. although the conf. center used to do much for the local area before all this. the whole thing has been good for the area. I just hate the elected misleading, for 10 plus years there has been a tax for a purpose. Has the money been used for other purposes? It shouldn't be used to bail out Bronner. How much do they make on the hotel? use that money for the conf. center upgrade.

in the paper today, the park authority is giving two mil to Bronner. was two mil all that was collected in 10-12 years? I find that hard to believe. Something isn't right.
