Bob Scott leaves Mayors Against Illegal Guns
SIOUX CITY | Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott is among a growing number of city leaders across the nation pulling out of a group call Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
The group, spearheaded by New York City Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has been an active advocate for gun control measures.
Scott, who joined the group after taking office last year, said he unsubscribed because their political views have exceeded his. Scott said he left about five months ago.
The group says the exact date was Feb. 14.
“I was never an active member,” Scott said. “They’re not just against illegal guns, they’re against all guns.”
John McCarthy, a spokesman for Bloomberg’s office, said the group is growing.
“Membership has actually increased by more than 50 percent from one year ago,” he said in an email. “We now have more than 1,000 mayors in the coalition nationwide, compared to 650 last year.”
McCarthy added that 171 mayors have joined the coalition since Scott left.
Scott first voiced his displeasure in February after U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncanrenewed his call for gun law reform during a presentation that included members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
At the time, Scott said “I became a member of that because it’s against illegal guns. Who isn’t against illegal guns?”
In Iowa, eight mayors are part of the coalition.
