Corporations attempted to protect themselves by buying unrelated businesses. The theory was that when one area was suffering, the  others would prosper.  That proved disastrous.  Businesses returned to what they knew and were good at.

Government's problems are numerous but boil down to two areas -- central planning and oversized whale.  Despite the failure of central planning everywhere attempted, Democrats insist that they will get it right next time.  Rather like the academics who stress that real communism has never been tried -- just give us one more chance and ignore the 180 million slaughtered, so far.  Oversized is the other reason.  Like the aforementioned corporations, there a few things government is truly mandated to perform and can do well within limits.  When, it attempts to overstep, it fails -- spectacularly.

i will give them a pass on the parachuting of arms. That is hard at the best of times.  During WWII, we attempted the same for Polish freedom fighters in the Warsaw uprising. Unfortunately, the Germans received a  number of the drops.

The US isn't the only one failing from government overreach.  For the 19th year, the EU auditors can't give a clean audit.

"The audit, published this morning, found that £109 billion out of a total of £117 billion spent by the EU in 2013 was "affected by material error”.

It means that the Brussels accounts have not been given the all clear for 19 years running.

Treasury sources said that the disclosure shows why the EU needs “urgent reform' :"

The only improvement is that the EU no longer fires or attempts to imprison the auditors for telling the truth.
