This is my opinion, in order to compete with other cities, we are going to have to have incentives to lure jobs here, but it must be trusted to the right people and not wasted on finding retail and restaurant jobs. In order to keep the entertainment here we are going to have to build a Civic Center and if this requires an additional 1/4th percent tax, it is going to have to happen. Now, what are we giving up 3/4 ths. percent is .75 per $100, or $7.50 per $1,000. Not much to give up to see that the future of our children and their children can have a future to live and work here. Now, if the gas prices go up from $2.09 to $3.00 everybody would complain and there is nothing you could do to stop it. I myself hate new taxes, just like anyone else, but we are never going anywhere if don't all pitch in the few pennies, or 3/4 ths of a penney to ensure that we move ahead.

I disagree, we have a perfectly fine civic center in florence, and several other places where our local music can "live"... from what I see, there is little, if any advertisement on any of our local musicians.

We just 'accidently' went into a place recently and a local band was playing... NO advertising on them, and they were really good. For what was going to be just dinner ended up being almost an entire night of great fun.

MS used to be the music capital of the South.. why can't we figure out how to ressurect that instead of raising taxes, ... taxes are killing us now.

Relating taxes to gasoline is like comparing apples to oranges. One can ride a bicycle, get a car pool going to save on gas, but tax is forever and it just keeps on inching up to a dime with the little "percentages" for this, for that for everything but what is important, and that is basic every day life.

No one can afford to go see any live music if we keep on raising it up and up and up...

We have people from our Cities to our Counties to our State to our Federal governments who mismanage money so bad that making an extra tax for music is just not right, not at this point of the game anyway.

That is NOT to say that I dislike live music, I LOVE IT!!! But, around here, if a live band wants to play, find somewhere, advertise and charge a COVER CHARGE that people has the decision to pay. Taxes takes that decision away from everyone, including the people who like live music.

In fact, it could turn even MORE people to the Karaoke way of life... Frowner
This is the honest truth! In order for Florence to build we MUST bend a little. A casino would help BUT here is where the rubber meets the road. Sunday beer sales would help tremendously. How do you think the people from out of town think? Go to a place to eat and the person says "Oh but this is Sunday and we cannot do it today". Now we did pass I think the law they could drink at the bar on Sundays but we need to bend a little more than that. A state wide lottery, well it will NEVER happen I don't think. I love the idea about a riverboat casino. Will it happen? Not in our lifetime. In order for Florence to grow and spread we are going to have to bend some. Love all of you! TheSwindleMaster

Yes, and not only that , if we had casinos that enertainment wouldn't cost much to go see.
I do disagree with you tho- the quansit hut that passes for an auditorium is pitiful, and the convention center, although beautiful, just isn't right for a major concert. We do need a good place for big name enertainment.
I think you and I are both too optomistic about the casinos. Alabama citizens are too narrow minded overall to let them come in. Than Status quo thing that comes with calling themselves "conservative".
I do agree with you tho on the tax. Maybe if we had a corporation headquaters like Bancorp South, they could help out.
How 'bout it Bronner, ? take some of those millions you are making on the hotel and convention center we gave you for $50.00 and build a good auditorium like Bancorp South's.

swindlemaster, I personally hate alcohol... but I do not force my opinons of it on anyone, and I would fight for YOUR right to drink it if that is what you wanted to do, provided you were of age and didn't drive!! But the people who dont WANT to drink on Sunday are in the minority now.

When the city of Florence went 'wet' on Sundays, it was the beginning of changing of the times for us.

Drinking on Sunday is just Taboo if one is in Church Razzer
3/4ths of $100 is less than candy bar or a cup of coffee or coke to see our area grows.

Do you honestly think that if this increase goes through it will be the last? I have seen sales taxes increase over 5% in my lifetime and I'm not that old. A half percent here and a half percent there adds up over the years. Inflation should take care of any needed increases because as the price of a product goes up, so does the tax amount.

You over feed a pig and the pig gets fat. The pig then wants more food due to its increased appetite. You give the pig a little more food thinking it can't hurt and it gets even bigger. The pig adjusts to the extra food and decides it is still a little bit hungry.... and so on and so on.

I equate the mentality of a tax increase to an employer reducing its employees wages because he is loosing money due to shoplifting. Instead of fixing the real problem and finding a way to stop the shoplifters, he punishes the innocent.

This sales tax increase is effectively a pay cut. We need to demand more accountability on how our money is spent. Before they ask us to take a pay cut, we need to demand that they fix the problems that got us to this point. Otherwise, we will be paying sales tax of 15 cents on the dollar on top of the multitude of other taxes that are also increasing inproportionate to inflation in the next 20 years.
I am lost on this one. Is ANOTHER tax increase proposed OTHER than the one for SEDA? Lately, I have been too busy to read the TD or watch local news. If this is speculation: I say NO WAY! Folks, let's face it, as bad as a lot of the citizens here WANT this to be Huntsville, IT AIN'T and with Von Braun Civic Center this close, the Shoals could NEVER compete for large audiences for major acts. Actually there is one thing I would like to see taxed more-- a lot more. Tobacco products.
I have one of my children who smokes (but keeps trying to quit). If we put a dollar/pack tax on, that may encourage him. Maybe exculate that up to $2 or $3 over a couple of years.
I was in Washington state several years ago , and noticed that their cigarettes were a lot higher than anywhere else I have been. Found out, they added $1.00/pack and used the proceeds to help fund health insurance for the citizens of the state. How bout that for a great idea?
