I am trying to figure out why Senator Shelby thinks it’s necessary to slip a $15,000,000 Earmark (Pork) into the FY11 Omnibus Spending Bill for the University of Alabama to be used for facilities and equipment? I think this is absurd. He is trying to get this kind of tax payer’s money to a school that has enough money to pay its football coach a multimillion dollar salary. If this money were going to be used to bring industry or jobs to Alabama I’d be all for it but not for a university that really doesn’t need it. I mean Com’on Man!

Yeah, but you do have to hand it to Shelby. He knew he liked "Bar-b-que" and may have gave lip service to the TEABAGGERS but always knew he was a grab the bacon Republican at heart and never went as far as to make any type of pledge. How is that pledge working out by the way, Rethugliteacons????? Confused
Training scientists and engineers at Alabama isn't a good thing for the state? 15 million wouldn't pay for a day on a Obama vacation.

Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala), a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, today announced Committee approval of the fiscal year 2011 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. Included in this bill is $15 million for the Health Sciences Center at the University of Alabama.

Upon completion, this facility will be a part of the larger interdisciplinary science and engineering research center on the University of Alabama’s campus. Following today’s action by the Committee, the bill will now go to the full Senate for consideration.

'Researchers at this facility will engage in cutting-edge research that will benefit people throughout the Southeast and across the nation,' said Shelby.

Shelby was once a pork barrel democrat. One day he stuck his finger in the wind and changed parties. Now he's a pork barrel republican. Only change was the initial in front of his name.

Want to answer the man's question, Mr TEABAGGER???? Big Grin
Without federal government appropriations, people in AlObama would still be picking cotton by hand. Shelby has directed $200million in capital improvements to the UA system, many of which bear his name. Its good to be the King...the King of Pork in the US Senate.

In the last election cycle, Shelby spent $80,000 of the $18million in his campaign fund, and overwhelmingly defeated his opponent. The TEA party doesnt exist in AlObama.

Well we haven't had a budget under Obama so it's pretty hard to figure out what is pork since every dime the government spends is in this spending bill.

Ahhh, the artful dodge.
I thought all you neocons thought all guvmnt spending that wasn't constitutional was pork. Do you want to inform us which part of the Constitution allows the government sponsored training of "engineers"?

In this case, it seems reasonably.

I hate the ones where they spend money to build a monument to themselves.

This is a bit of the problem with our country. Congress has the worst rating in history, but most congressmen/women and senators get re-elected. You see it's the old "everybody elses politicians that are weasels, mine is the good guy." "My guy brings home the money". it's just pork when it's spent outside YOUR district.
I guess I didn’t ask my question in the right way. I have no squabble with our system for appropriating moneys that will be used to benefit the growth of our state, create industry and jobs. Using millions to build up a school that obviously can afford to pay its own way is what I don’t understand. I think Senator Shelby needs to make his cronies at U of A understand that he needs to be spending his time helping the entire state and they need to tighten their belts a bit and find ways to pay for their expansion programs. Stop sucking monies from a system that needs to be helping the population as a whole. Not all Earmarks are bad. Most of them are for good causes that benefit all the people who paid into the system they are being drawn from. Earmarks that serve private entities should not be allowed.
