Arpaio is a Neanderthal nitwit. His shenanigans have cost his county millions of dollars in paying judgments against him and them arising from the sorry, inhumane way he operates his medieval jail system. Arpaio is a disgrace!

"As New Times first reported last week, Arpaio has cost Maricopa County a staggering $41.4 million in legal fees, insurance premiums, and payouts to jail-abuse victims. Arpaio’s track record is so bad that the county has been forced to switch to an insurance policy with a $5 million deductible. Insurance won’t cover a cent of any suit that settles for less than that."

And yet he's popular enough with his constituents to get reelected every term since 1992.

It doesn't matter whether you like him or not...just as long as his voters do.

It DOES matter that this creature is a disgrace to the profession of law enforcement, whether or not he is successful in getting elected to office. The voters who put him back time after time have got to be an ignorant, heartless bunch of desert redneck cretins!

If one of these inmates had raped or beaten or murdered you or a family member, would you still want to fund their day-camp/resort style detention center?

I hold no favor for "day-camp/resort style detention centers," and I submit that that is a gross mischaracterization if it is your intent to suggest that typical jails are of that type. Arpaio's jail is brutishly inhumane. In the Arizona summer, many of his prisoners must endure 100-degree plus temperatures in their tent city type jail. It is not necessary to create anything like a country club or day camp atmosphere for incarcerated persons, but it is UNECESSARY to submit prisoners to the abuses perpetrated by Arpaio.

Every lawfully employed outside worker in that state has to endure the same environmental conditions.

No sympathy for the criminals.
I do wish there was some way for inmates to offset the cost of housing them. Maybe plant gardens and learn to can produce for the winter? I can imagine the long list of regulations this might violate, or the hoops a facility would have to jump through to get this approved. But I think besides the money saved, it would help the inmates too.

And I'm talking about non violent offenders.

My sons had to endure 100 plus degree heat with backpacks and body armor in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wish we had a sheriff like that here. The money the county has had to spend is not the fault of the sheriff, it's the fault of the loons that think prisoners should be handled with kids gloves.

Thank you to your sons. I'm very glad to hear that they have been provided body armor, though. I know that this has not always been a given for all soldiers.

You make an excellent point.

What's inhumane about that? A/C has only been around for about 100 years. What did people do before? Your body acclimates. It's no big deal. They should be uncomfortable...they're in prison.

Sounds alot better than some of the places/things I endured during my 21 years in the US Army serving my country.
