Joe Frank Fowler is running for re-election. As of now, he has no opposition.

The other place that is up for election is the one currently occupied by Terry Holden. He is running for sheriff therefore will be vacating his board post. Chad Holden is the only candidate who has officially qualified to run for this place.

These are the only places up for re-election this year. The next election in 2012 will have Ralph Thompson and Barbara Cornelius place's. Mr. Beavers won in 2008 so his place will not be up for a vote until 2014.

Board members are elected to 6 year terms.
Vote them all out of office! Any school board that is redneck and backwards as Lauderdale county needs to be removed. They allow elementary kids to bring cell phones to school and use them during school. I check my child's facebook page and I see her classmates on facebook all during the day posting pictures of them at school and playing the games that show up on facebook such as farmland, mafia wars etc.
Total waste! Vote them out!
At least he will have to spend some money to assure his re-electionSmiler Being on the board of education is JFF's life. He probably wouldn't live a year if he wasn't re-elected.

I am impressed with what Chad Holden has said so far, but he is from Greenhill also. 3 Board members from Greenhill is a "little much" for me!

Right now Mr. Thompson is the only one from the West end of the county.
Big Orange - why does your elementary school age child need a phone that is internet capable? The big thing with parents and cell phones was so the child could get in touch with the parent, ie "call". If you are so worried about them being on the internet with their phone during school, discontinue that feature with your service provider!!

My child does not have a phone. I bet she is the only sixth grader that does not have one. I am strongly against phones at school. I grew up going to the office and using a phone to call home. High school kids I understand need a phone kept in the car, but not elementary aged kids. It's sad to watch kids walk out of school with their heads down looking at a stupid phone texting. They constantly hold their phones like an addiction such as a cigarette. Why do parents need to be incontact with elementary aged kids, I know where my kids are during school, parents that think they need to stay intouch with the kids during school are stupid and redneck. The facts are they want their child to be cool and fit in, cut it any way you want that's the truth. My friend whose child attends discovery middle school in Madison said the confusion caused by cell phones after the shooting will lead to changes, they did notify parents the kids were ok, but all the parents went to the school and tried to get in which caused chaos that was uncontrollable. Since then the rumors caused by kids texting each other has caused panic with in many schools.

I agree about the cellphones, but I don't see how it is 'redneck'. You used that word twice in two posts. Are you just mad?

I'm from the east end and I agree there's never been too many ppl from the west end of the county on the bd or as supt., but I'd still rather vote for what the person is and not where he's from. That's a good way to have a bd that's not what it should be.

No...not mad just concerned our board makes decisions based on popular demand. I travel throughout the country and "Redneck" is the perception that is placed on us. I don't like it..I guess I could use another word such as dumba--. I know people that live paycheck to paycheck and their kids have nice phones just so they fit in. The $100 a month avg. they spend for a phone can be put toward other things such as food, clothes etc or even a college fund. It's their money and they can do what they want with it, but I hear them struggle to pay the light bill. And this is nationwide not just here. But this board makes decisions based on popular demand not the safety and well being for the students.

as is well exampled by the board we have now and have had for years. Until somebody breaks up JFF cartel it will business as usual at the Lauderdale Co. Board of Education. Not sure when the people of Lauderdale County are going to wake up and realize this.
JFF will have to earn it this time, a good canidate from the west end of the county has qualified and will oppose JFF this June. IF YOU WANT CHANGE , GET OUT AND WORK FOR THESE NEW CANIDATES, CALL FOR THE NEW CANIDATES, AND ESPECIALLY VOTE FOR THEM. Lets ALL quit complaining and DO something about it, myself included. Just think; 2010-two new Board members, 2012-two new board members and new superintindent, 2014-one new board member. If we the People and Parents of Lauderdale County want to make a statement that we're fed up with the same old same old, in just four years we can have a totally new Board and Administration for our kids future. If the new ones don't work out, VOTE THEM OUT. Its time for "NEW BLOOD" to be making decisions for our children, Its time the next Generation to step up and make a STATEMENT. Taking our Country back starts with Local Government and so on. All Local Gov. needs a GOOD OVERHAUL.

AMEN! VOTE THEM OUT!
I would like to respond to a few things that have been mentioned: 1) cell phones; Two of my daughters have cell phones, they "NOW" take them to school. Why "NOW", because of a shooting that took place this time last year right in our back door. The school was on lockdown, they wouldn't let us check out students & we couldn't go in. I understand all those things. However, thanks to the media & computers in school, these students knew there might be a person out there looking to hurt some family members & those family memebrs were in their classes. My daughters used their friends cell phones to call me & let me know what class they were in & what was going on. Rogers & Brooks are now both using the (trial)policy of allowing cell phones, during breaks or when changing classes. I have heard from the teachers that they have far fewer cell phone problems during actual class. 2) Joe Frank Fowler: Please do not blame all of Greenhill for electing this man. I have lived in the Greenhill area for nearly 18 years now. I have never voted for this man & I have always voted. We are well aware of his lack in doing his elected job. I think you need to lean more toward the AGE he is & that is who is voting for him.
3) Chad Holden: there is an article about Mr.Holden on shoalsinsider.com He sounds like a very compitent candiate for the BOE. The fact that he was born & raised in Greenhill has nothing to do with his ability to lead. "Having 3" persons from Greenhill, well apparently we can't count JFF because he doesn't do anything. Maybe we should give Mr.Holden a chance- I by chance have never met him, but will consider him for the job.
One more thing before I sign out, Dan Beavers was a supporter of the Jerry Hill campaign for Superintendent of education. So was his son "Lil" Dan Beavers, who is head football coach at Rogers.

I don't know who you are talking to I guess they must work in the lunch room. I have a family member that is a teacher and kids are using phones to cheat, sending pronographic material to each other, harass other students and calling home to get parents to check them out before they take test they didn't study for. Don't think it's not going on here...it is. When this blows up because of a child getting exposed or a student is arrested for sending pictures of a naked classmate, will it be worth it?

Big Orange, no school is perfect & if you think that this same activity is not going on in every other school in the U.S.- then you must live in a box. We live in a society where terrible things are exposed to our children everyday. We as parents must find ways on our own to protect our children. As for your smart ^&* lunchroom comment. No, I happen to know every teacher in that school. I have 3 children there: 1 in high school, 1 in jr. high & 1 in elementary. I am at that school usually 3 to 4 times a week for one reason or another. I also happen to know that at least 34 of those teachers graduated from Rogers High School & some of them act like they are still the students. I know 2 of them that harass the students because they went to school with their parents & didn't like them. ALl I can tell you is maybe you need to home school or maybe put on some rose colored glasses with blinders on them.

I've worked and lived throughout the country. I believe in protecting kids. Numerous incidents have been reported of kids having their picture taken and sent without their permission. While I was in PHX arizona a 8th grade girl had her picture spread throughout school, she was so embarrassed she couldn't bare it and hung herself...think about that poor child and her parents. Why do we spend a large amount of money to filter the contents on the computers at school but we allow cell phones at school. Phones can surf the web and send pornographic material to each other. Talk about stupid. I know I'm the minority but unlike most, I've seen what will happen here. I understand a high school kid needs a phone but not during school hours. I still don't understand why a elementary age kid needs one. A cell phone is basically used for convience and social acceptance, I know where my kids are and if their is a problem at school i have complete faith in teachers including your friends in the lunchroom can handle it. Madison police were upset that parents were trying to get into the school that was locked down and getting upset because their kids texted them, it made matters worse. I think of that poor child in PHX...yes bad things happen, that I do agree with you.... If we can protect one child from being exposed or hurt and if it meant banning phones from schools it would be worth it to me. The school board based their decision on popular demand to get re-elected. Not in protecting the kids.

And we wonder why the public school system is failing !!!! Oh yes, I forgot, not enough money. What was I thinking.
I am curious as to your apparent problem with the lunchroom workers? I know a few of the lunchroom workers & I can promise you these people do know EVERYTHING going on with everyone in that school. But as I stated before I know ALL of the teachers as I am also a substitute teacher. In 2 of your comments you have sort of "knocked" lunchroom workers. Why? Even if that is totally off the subject.
Yes, most all cellphones are for acceptance, but then you have a large number of parents that are not able to be with their children 24/7 & use it to make sure they can connect with them. Personally I do not see a need for an elementary students to have a cell, but then they aren't all my kids& I don't know their stories. Oh & I just love when "Big City Folk" like to come in and tell us what we are doing wrong...............and the shooting I was referring to didn't take place in Huntsville it took place in Greenhill

Big Orange, I think that the principals at each school have the right to modify the cell phone policy. At my school LCHS, high school students may use their phones during non academic times. The elementary students can not use theirs at all during the day. They can only use them when school is over for the day and they are outside the building. Maybe you should talk to your principal and see if they will change their policy. It seems to work at our school; very few kids have iss for phone violations.

No problem at all...I have complete respect for any person that works or volunteers for any school at any capacity. Most lunchroom personel do not have one on one contact with the school kids thats what I'm referring too. If you ask your kids to name the lunchroom staff I bet they can't. I feel the support staff should be paid more because they play a vital role in the daily function of the school. Yes I've lived some places that were a little different, some of it was good and some was bad. Each place is different. Something that works in HSV might not work here but Lauderdale BOE is making policies based on popular demand and not the well being for the kids. As I said before....Why does a 4th grader need a phone at school? Why do kids need to text each other between classes? Can't they talk to them at school face to face. I did when I was in school and It helped me professionally because I can communicate without looking down at a cell phone. I do see the need for a high school student that is involved with after school activities in needing a phone or a student that is driving to school. I checked my daughters facebook page and I see pictures of her friends in front of a mirror in the bathroom, the picture is innocent, but it was posted on facebook during school. Kids will take advantage of the policy, it's human nature, and someone will get hurt because of this. I think the BOE is not looking at the big picture...I talked to Valentine about this, I sent him cases that involved kids with phones at school, his stupid repley....."I see your point, but the majority of parents want their kids to have phones at school." I think the BOE needs to be replaced because of their policy. Many areas throughout the country have been exposed to this technology longer, the school districts in those areas tried this same policy, most of these school districts now ban phones because kids abused it and some kids got hurt. If we can protect one child from getting hurt, then I feel the policy needs to be changed, sure it's a inconvenience going or calling the front desk at the school, but before cell phones that procedure was fine. In a few small incidents some parents do work strange hours and days or they are single parents so the kid might need a phone for after school to stay in contact their parents, but the majority use for a phone in school is strictly covenience and social acceptance.
Cell phones are so common now, and they are a big problem for schools and teachers.

I know that if they are banned, teachers end up spending a big chunk of time policing the ban. And if they are allowed, teachers have to worry about them being used to cheat. I also know that some systems have swung wildly in the opposite direction from banning the phones, and are now using them in class. Kids texting answers to teachers, etc. For that matter, I've heard sermons where the preacher turned on his phone and invited texts during the sermon. Seems gimmicky to me.

I see the pros and cons, and I know what the problems are. I honestly don't know what the best response is.

What if the kids dropped their cell phones in a bin on the way into class?

One thing I do know for sure: I am sorry that we have to worry about the kids cheating or porning with cell phones. The 'sexting' issue is serious because of the way kids can be charged with child porn for doing it. And it is so true that once a photo goes into cyberspace, it can never be retrieved. Some people feel that this is reason enough to ban the phones completely. Certainly one incident like the suicide in Phoenix is too many.

Someone has discussed emergencies at school...like when the shooter was loose in Green Hill, or when the child was actually shot in Huntsville. I'd like to hear opinions from parents here, specifically on that topic. I would want to know NOW if my child was ok. Would it really be disruptive for the kids to have the ability to call Mom and say, "I am alive"? Do you think that in these cases the schools are too secretive? Maybe this is a question for the law enforcement folks on the forum.

re: lunchroom ladies. When we were in school, we could name them. They were all moms of students.

My kids are not in elementary school anymore, but I feel sure that if I had an elementary school age child right now, there would be no cell phone going to school with them. I can think of a few times when I might want my elementary age child to have a phone with them. For a sleep over, I'd send my own phone, or my husband's. I wouldn't drop an elementary aged child off at the skating rink or mall and leave them, so that reason for a cell phone is not in play here.

Actually, this is very interesting because I can't think of any reason why an elementary school student would need a phone at school. And now I'm trying to think of reasons that would apply to high school kids and not younger kids....

It surprises me to hear y'all talking about how the little kids have cell phones. I suppose it is apparent that parents buy the phones for the younger kids so that the kids can keep up socially with their classmates. Parents do that with clothes and shoes and everything else. I guess that's just a variable in the equation that we can't do anything about.
I contacted Valentine after the article about sexting that was published in the TD. He never returned my call....I've talked to him in the past and he knows my opinion on this topic. He was ignoring me because he knew he was about to get an ear full. I have a child in 2nd grade, several kids in his class have phones. Kids are judged by clothes they wear, cars they drive and now cell phones they have. All we are doing is adding fuel to the fire.

I'm sorry this is starting in elementary school. so much pressure.
Re Cell phones in school. I believe in this day and time students should be allowed to have cell phones. Of course there will be those who will attempt to break the rules set forth but the majority of students will abide by the rules.
Don't you think people will mostly do what we expect of them? Us included?

Why does a 4th grader need a phone during school?
