I have heard many rumors. Exactly who is running for what place?

Big Orange - why does your elementary school age child need a phone that is internet capable? The big thing with parents and cell phones was so the child could get in touch with the parent, ie "call". If you are so worried about them being on the internet with their phone during school, discontinue that feature with your service provider!!

My child does not have a phone. I bet she is the only sixth grader that does not have one. I am strongly against phones at school. I grew up going to the office and using a phone to call home. High school kids I understand need a phone kept in the car, but not elementary aged kids. It's sad to watch kids walk out of school with their heads down looking at a stupid phone texting. They constantly hold their phones like an addiction such as a cigarette. Why do parents need to be incontact with elementary aged kids, I know where my kids are during school, parents that think they need to stay intouch with the kids during school are stupid and redneck. The facts are they want their child to be cool and fit in, cut it any way you want that's the truth. My friend whose child attends discovery middle school in Madison said the confusion caused by cell phones after the shooting will lead to changes, they did notify parents the kids were ok, but all the parents went to the school and tried to get in which caused chaos that was uncontrollable. Since then the rumors caused by kids texting each other has caused panic with in many schools.

At least he will have to spend some money to assure his re-election Being on the board of education is JFF's life. He probably wouldn't live a year if he wasn't re-elected.
I am impressed with what Chad Holden has said so far, but he is from Greenhill also. 3 Board members from Greenhill is a "little much" for me!
Right now Mr. Thompson is the only one from the West end of the county.

JFF will have to earn it this time, a good canidate from the west end of the county has qualified and will oppose JFF this June. IF YOU WANT CHANGE , GET OUT AND WORK FOR THESE NEW CANIDATES, CALL FOR THE NEW CANIDATES, AND ESPECIALLY VOTE FOR THEM. Lets ALL quit complaining and DO something about it, myself included. Just think; 2010-two new Board members, 2012-two new board members and new superintindent, 2014-one new board member. If we the People and Parents of Lauderdale County want to make a statement that we're fed up with the same old same old, in just four years we can have a totally new Board and Administration for our kids future. If the new ones don't work out, VOTE THEM OUT. Its time for "NEW BLOOD" to be making decisions for our children, Its time the next Generation to step up and make a STATEMENT. Taking our Country back starts with Local Government and so on. All Local Gov. needs a GOOD OVERHAUL.

I've worked and lived throughout the country. I believe in protecting kids. Numerous incidents have been reported of kids having their picture taken and sent without their permission. While I was in PHX arizona a 8th grade girl had her picture spread throughout school, she was so embarrassed she couldn't bare it and hung herself...think about that poor child and her parents. Why do we spend a large amount of money to filter the contents on the computers at school but we allow cell phones at school. Phones can surf the web and send pornographic material to each other. Talk about stupid. I know I'm the minority but unlike most, I've seen what will happen here. I understand a high school kid needs a phone but not during school hours. I still don't understand why a elementary age kid needs one. A cell phone is basically used for convience and social acceptance, I know where my kids are and if their is a problem at school i have complete faith in teachers including your friends in the lunchroom can handle it. Madison police were upset that parents were trying to get into the school that was locked down and getting upset because their kids texted them, it made matters worse. I think of that poor child in PHX...yes bad things happen, that I do agree with you.... If we can protect one child from being exposed or hurt and if it meant banning phones from schools it would be worth it to me. The school board based their decision on popular demand to get re-elected. Not in protecting the kids.

I am curious as to your apparent problem with the lunchroom workers? I know a few of the lunchroom workers & I can promise you these people do know EVERYTHING going on with everyone in that school. But as I stated before I know ALL of the teachers as I am also a substitute teacher. In 2 of your comments you have sort of "knocked" lunchroom workers. Why? Even if that is totally off the subject.
Yes, most all cellphones are for acceptance, but then you have a large number of parents that are not able to be with their children 24/7 & use it to make sure they can connect with them. Personally I do not see a need for an elementary students to have a cell, but then they aren't all my kids& I don't know their stories. Oh & I just love when "Big City Folk" like to come in and tell us what we are doing wrong...............and the shooting I was referring to didn't take place in Huntsville it took place in Greenhill[QUOTE]
No problem at all...I have complete respect for any person that works or volunteers for any school at any capacity. Most lunchroom personel do not have one on one contact with the school kids thats what I'm referring too. If you ask your kids to name the lunchroom staff I bet they can't. I feel the support staff should be paid more because they play a vital role in the daily function of the school. Yes I've lived some places that were a little different, some of it was good and some was bad. Each place is different. Something that works in HSV might not work here but Lauderdale BOE is making policies based on popular demand and not the well being for the kids. As I said before....Why does a 4th grader need a phone at school? Why do kids need to text each other between classes? Can't they talk to them at school face to face. I did when I was in school and It helped me professionally because I can communicate without looking down at a cell phone. I do see the need for a high school student that is involved with after school activities in needing a phone or a student that is driving to school. I checked my daughters facebook page and I see pictures of her friends in front of a mirror in the bathroom, the picture is innocent, but it was posted on facebook during school. Kids will take advantage of the policy, it's human nature, and someone will get hurt because of this. I think the BOE is not looking at the big picture...I talked to Valentine about this, I sent him cases that involved kids with phones at school, his stupid repley....."I see your point, but the majority of parents want their kids to have phones at school." I think the BOE needs to be replaced because of their policy. Many areas throughout the country have been exposed to this technology longer, the school districts in those areas tried this same policy, most of these school districts now ban phones because kids abused it and some kids got hurt. If we can protect one child from getting hurt, then I feel the policy needs to be changed, sure it's a inconvenience going or calling the front desk at the school, but before cell phones that procedure was fine. In a few small incidents some parents do work strange hours and days or they are single parents so the kid might need a phone for after school to stay in contact their parents, but the majority use for a phone in school is strictly covenience and social acceptance.

I contacted Valentine after the article about sexting that was published in the TD. He never returned my call....I've talked to him in the past and he knows my opinion on this topic. He was ignoring me because he knew he was about to get an ear full. I have a child in 2nd grade, several kids in his class have phones. Kids are judged by clothes they wear, cars they drive and now cell phones they have. All we are doing is adding fuel to the fire.

Re Cell phones in school. I believe in this day and time students should be allowed to have cell phones. Of course there will be those who will attempt to break the rules set forth but the majority of students will abide by the rules.
Don't you think people will mostly do what we expect of them? Us included?
