I am tired of people trying to shove religion down my throat, and I am a christian by the way. Just the other day this sweet lady told me my children were beautiful, I said thank you, then she said "you've got them babies in church don't you" I said no mamm not at this time because I work the graveyard shift at work. Then she asks me what my religion is I told her I was raised baptist. She said "you should join a nice methodist church, because everyone knows baptists are going to hell" After picking my jaw up off the ground I told her I had to go and to have a lovely day!! I just didn't know what to say to that! What would you all say?

Methodists are Episcopalians whose clergy could not pass the test for ordination. That was in a comedy skit I heard once and I laughed out loud when I heard it! The next line was that Episcopalians were Catholics who did not like Italians or Poles! It was one funny skit. I do not remember all the analogies but they were all in a gentle mocking spirit, not spiteful.
I think it's safe to assume that the woman you spoke with is either off her rocker or she was kidding.

I have known folks of all denominations throughout my life and have never been told "if you don't belong to my denomination, you are going to hell" by anyone of any denomination, including Church of Christ. I've heard stories, mainly because they are unusual. Perhaps in preceding generations this was a problem...not so much anymore. I'm 42, btw.

IMO, the original church as laid out in the Bible discouraged separation. Denominations are man-made. When we get to Heaven, if God asks us to which denomination we belong, I'll eat my hat. Wink

Hi Joy,

You are so right! This song has always long been a favorite; for it tells it like it is!

IT'S NOT WHAT'S OVER THE DOOR

1. Some people think today,
If heaven you would see,
You must belong to their church,
Or be lost eternally.
But according to god's word,
What he's still looking for,
Is what he finds within your heart,
And not what's Over the door.

Chorus:
It's not what's over the door
Of the church that you attend,
That makes you a child of god,
And a heavenly citizen.
As the eyes of the lord look this world o'er,
There's just one thing he's lookin' for
Can't you see that's what's in your heart
And not what's over the door.

2. Does jesus live in your heart,
And have you been born again,
Has the blood of calvary's lamb,
Washed away all your sins?
Are you fully trusting in,
The crucified risen lord,
Can't you see that it's what's in your heart,
And not what's over the door.

Can't you see that's what's in your heart
And not what's over the door.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

C of Cers don't usually use "get saved" as they believe pretty orthodox salvation theology and not Calvinistic. Now they are legalistic to the Nth degree, and talking about splits: they make the spats that various Eastern Orthodox divisions look like a friendly parting of the ways! That is why there are so many Northside/Southside Churches of Christ in any given town! Shoot, they will split over a carpet color it seems.

Not that we Anglicans don't have our own little sects that each claim to be "the real one" but they are so few in number as to be not worth mentioning for the most part. The renegade bishops have all lost their property when the national church brought suit to regain what is rightfully theirs/ours.

I have never known anyone like that, that is why I was shocked! However I don't think she was joking because she had a serious look on her face. I was kind of stunned for a minute, I bet she thought I was a moron!! lol

Well, there may have been a moron there, bless it's heart, but I don't think it was you. Wink

I didn't answer your question. What WOULD I have said after hearing "You should join a nice Methodist church because everyone knows Baptists are going to Hell."?

Knowing me, it would strike me as funny & I'd laugh, regain composure & then out of curiosity, I'd have to hear the story behind that deduction, which would probably get me tickled again. Big Grin
