They're rioting in Africa
They're starving in Spain
There's hurricanes in Florida
And Texas needs rain . . . .

Now If you read the last verse and the final chorus, I would like to suggest that the arsenal of MUSHROOM CLOUDS IS LOCKED AND LOADED.
Our President has been playing Brinksmanship (from the old days of the cold war, meaning taking the world to the brink of nuclear war) for the past 6 years.
I AM WONDERING WHEN SOME VOICE WILL MAKE IT TO THE EDITORIAL PAGES, OR THE TEE VEE "NEWS" WITH A RENEWAL OF THAT IDEA.
Another cold war Ditty that comes to mind is "We will all go together when we go" by Tom Lerher.

For those of you who are frightened of the prospect of eternal warfare as a population control method, Welcome to the club paranoia. Remember sometimes Paranoia is the only reasonable response to reality.

"The absence of patriotic poetry that is both popular and poetically acccomplished in the present great clash of civilizations and cultures is odd. America has a population of 300 million people. If one in a million is a real poet of ability -- which I think is a realistic guess -- surely there should be some patriotic, positive, affirmative ones among those 300 who can create words that sing and inspire."

I suppose that the lack of poetry celebrating Modern Patriotism is the reason for the lack of poetry decrying the waste of war. Without one voice, the opposing voice has no hook.
The author of this piece puts Kipling in the catagory of great authors of Patriotic poetry. His best, in my opinion, is Entitled "The Last of the Light Brigade." It is a masterpiece of description of the fate of the RETURNING SOLDIER. Not the warrior, it is certainly patriotic, but it takes the Government and the people of Great Britain to task for their apathy about the fate of the Veterans.

Again, a personal observation. There is little or no patriotic poetry because people of decent sensibility recognize the great clash of cultures as a phoney lable. This war in Iraq does not inspire thrilling poetry, because there is NO HONOR IN IT.

I have noticed a lack of good anti-war music like we had in the 60's. Could be the lack of a draft means this war does not directely affect young people to the same extent.

at any rate here is one for you old hippies- taken from "The Monster" by Steppenwolf

"We don't know how to mind our own business
'cause the whole world's gotta be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
no matter who's the winner, we can't pay the cost.
'Cause there's a monster on the loose---

I think the abolishment of the draft is a one factor of this situation, although I am not in favor of bringing it back. Even in the 60's it was possible to avoid military service with money and connections. Two benificiaries of this were eventually elected President.

Yes, and look what happened to the Dixie Chicks.
It is a sad day when we are told that if we don't support this president, then we are not a patroit, and that if we question his (so far all bad) decisions, we are against America, that we support the terrorist, or that we are some kind of "blame America first" mindset. I guess all that retoric was hatched by Karl Rove, and fed to Fox news to futher propigate their lies.

excelman.
What came first, the Chicken or the egg?
I don't think Karl Rove came first, I think he was hatched. He hatched from an egg that I call monopoly media. Rupeert Murdock came before Rove. I think that Rush Limbaugh and Karl Rove were hatched from the same clutch of eggs. The Public met Limbaugh first, and his Cousins the horde of Right Wing Pundits were nurtured by the monopoly media.
Rove, Gingrich, the entire Neo Conservative movement could not have prospered whithout the monopoly media.
But, the monopoly media was regulated until their was a Conservative named Ronald Reagan. The Great Communicator became the ONLY Communicator by silencing the opposing voices. It was the Reagan FCC that eliminated the Fairness doctrine, changed the ownership rules and terminated wide access to media.
Corporations and Businesses pay for all the media in the US. They effectively own it. They are the advertisers, and they are the owners of the press.
And, excelman, " Yes, and look what happened to the Dixie Chicks. I say, LOOK WHAT THE NEDIA DID TO THE DIXIE CHICKS. We know what happened to them. What we need to focus on is who did it to them.
The question raised in this thread is "Where are the opposing voices?" How can it be that there are NO songs GLORIFYING THE WAR IN IRAQ? And NO songs decrying the war in Iraq?"
I think the answer is, "There is nothing to glorify in Iraq, and the songs decrying Iraq are all in small clubs in small venues, being sung by THOUSANDS of cousins to the Dixie Chicks to small audiences who are helpless to widen the appeal of the music.

stay tuned for part two.

PART TWO
excelman.
What came first, the Chicken or the egg?

With the music of the Vietnam era, some specific songs come immediatly to my old and tired mind. Therr is the "Ballad of the Green Beret" A voice commentary from a Canadian calling on his friends to "Support The USA. On the other side, the music of Woodstock, Hendricks "National Anthem" "War, what is it good for" and others.
We are not hearing this kind of music today. There are no equivalents to "The Ballad of the Green Beret" or "War." Actually there are equivelants to "War," on the internet, and I believe in the small clubs around Colleges.
Corporate interests are served by protecting American interests abroad. The are not served by resisting American Aggression abroad. Corporations Control Broadcast, Cable, Print. They do not control INTERNET. Internet is available to almost everyone, but it is huge, confusing, disorganized anarchy.
Google "war music" and get 612 MILLION hits. Try "anti war music." 97 million hits. There are 75 million hits, and this is number two http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5174757/ if it ain't pro-war, it ain't on country radio - COUNTRY MUSIC.
Music is propoganda.
Effective propoganda is, by necessity, widely disseminated. If you have a debate, you have at least two sides. Pro, and Con. If only the pro side is heard, the pro side wins, regardless of its validity. CONTROL OF THE MEDIA CAME FIRST. That is the Reagan Legacy, and while not a single NEO CONSERVATIVE WILL SAY IT OUT LOUD, The neo conservative movement would have stayed marginalized without the loss of the fairness in broadcasting doctrine.

Me too, Ed... it was a SAD SAD SAD thing to see on TV and to read in the news... after our Troops gave all they could give, they came home to a bunch of idiots that blamed THEM for being in Vietnam... Those were the days that we didn't even CONSIDER the Political leaders were responsible.

Makes me just sad to remember all that Anti-War crap that went on... for what seemed like forever!

Kindred, you sound like you are about the age of my little sister(s). Two of them got facial scars in anti-war protests. The youngest is now a Surgical Nurse, and Licensed Attorney. She is also the first woman to complete cullinary apprenticeship in Arizona. The Middle one is a Regional Director of a State Environmental Department Office. The eldest is a state coordinator of Volunteers of the Girl Scouts, and former Mayor of a town in New Hampshire. Her facial scar is from falling into the running board of a parked '38 Packard. Some of us are a lot older than you.
NOT ONE OF THEM, EVER INSULTED A RETURNING GI. I was involved in DOZENS OF WAR PROTESTS. I never heard a chant of "Baby Killer" directed at returning servicemen, but, I did hear a lot of questions tossed at government officials, Like "What the (deleted)are we fighting for" and "Killing Babies makes me ill" Now, if the propogandists of the day wanted to change that to an insult to CONSCRIPTED TROOPS SENT TO KILL AND MAIM IN THE NAME OF LIBERTY, so be it. THE INSULTS WERE AIMED AT THE GOVERNEMNT. ANY SOLDIER WHO TOOK THEM PERSONALLY WAS SUPPORTING THE GOVERNMENT.
