I don't know how it is now at Wal-mart but I worked there one summer, I was laid off from my regular job, you never got over 32 hours in any Week, this made you not qualifying for any Benefits, I once got 31 hours and they came to me and told me to go home, We are making china so Rich that I heard on the news that they were constructing 35 new merchant Ships, what will you bet that when they are launched that they will all have Guns on them, you can listen to any of the people in the middle east and china and tell that they are lying like a dog, look for them to start harrasing our Navy when they get a little better equipped and we gave them the Money to do it.

Thanks for this post... that is why I kept telling people to GOOGLE Walmart and China and just SEE for themselves instead of relying on a personal experience 10 years ago. We are not living back then, we are living NOW, and people need to know just what they are spending their hard-earned money for...

Scary thing is, one can spend SO much of their hard-earned money that someday, the money just won't cover it anymore with what is happening as we speak.
Thanks for telling your experience!!!

We give China money, they gives us products. We give Israel money, they give us nothing. We give north Korea money, they give us threats.

Where do you think the mid-east countries get their money?

If you folks are so against importing products from other countries, then chunk your computer out the door...where do you think the parts come from? What about your TV? Your car?

Its naive to think the U.S. can isolate its self from the rest of the world.
I look for the US label, when possible. But, as to putting guns on merchant ships. Anti-aircraft missiles might make some sense. But, arming merchant ships is like sending war elephants into modern battle. When we sold passenger aircraft to China it was suggested they would use them as bombers. Again, might as well send a water buffalo against a tank.

Through August 2005, the United States was running a $126 billion trade deficit with China...

I don't have a love affair with Walmart...never have, never will. But I got to thinking about that trade deficit.....

Ya know, I have a $6,000 a year trade deficit with my local grocery store...I buy from him all the time, but he ain't bought a thing from me. There's about a $2,000 a year trade deficit between me and Florence Utilities,...I regularly buy from them but they ain't bought a thing from me.

Ya know that trade deficit might just be because the average Chinese worker can't afford the goods made in the United States. And because China is going through an industrial revolution similar to what the US went through at the turn of the last century, when OUR goods were exported and sold all over the world.

I personally would like to know where you got your data from? Also why only 53%, if that is a true number? That leave 47% of the people NOT covered... Where did your 90% come into play here? Just trying to do the math, and would like the site where that is broken down?

As can Japan Frowner
Once China runs out of room and resources, which are already a problem, they will go on the offensive.
They are communist, they believe in world domination, and they fall under the radar. They let North Korea take the headlines while they are secretly doing the same thing.
I pray we never see the day China decides to unleash its plan on us and the world.

This is a major reason the US must continue to show military strength in that it may be the only thing keeping China and others at bay.

Are you kidding me?????

The data comes from a memo from Executive Vice President for Benefits Susan Chambers. Some other things mentioned in the memo:

“Given the impact of tenure on wages and beneits, the cost of an Associate with 7 years of tenure is almost 55 percent more than the cost of an Associate with 1 year of tenure, yet there is no diference in his or her productivity.”

She added that “because we pay an Associate more in salary and beneits as his or her tenure increases, we are pricing that Associate out of the labor market, increasing the likelihood that he or she will stay with Wal-Mart.”

To solve this “problem,” Wal-Mart has made long-term employment less rewarding by imposing wage caps on hourly jobs. Instead of ofering raises for a job well done, Wal-Mart has instituted new pay ranges for each job category and limited wages in each category. Once employees reach the top of their pay range, their hourly rate is frozen, with no cost-of-living adjustments.

In her memo, Ms. Chambers stated that “spouses are by far the most expensive plan members to cover.” Ms. Chambers recommended decreasing “cross-subsidization of spouses through higher premiums or other charges.” Now, in an efort to attract unmarried workers as well as discouraging spouses from joining their plan, Wal-Mart has implemented a 50 percent increase in the bi-weekly surcharge - from $50 to $75 - for spouses who have access to other medical coverage. According to Wal-Mart’s 2007 Employee Benefit’s book, Wal-Mart will charge $1,800 per year as a spousal surcharge for its “Value Plan.”

Ms. Chambers acknowledged that Wal-Mart’s coverage was expensive for low-income families and that Wal-Mart had a signiicant percentage of Associates and their children on public assistance. “In total, 46 percent of Associates’ children are either on Medicaid or are uninsured.” She might have added that in 23 states – all states that release such data - Wal-Mart leads the list of companies with the most employees and dependents enrolled in state-funded health care programs.

And it goes on and on. You can read it for yourself here: http://walmart.3cdn.net/d959a6ca222757323a_fjm6brfgb.pdf

If people continue to feed the Wal-Mart monster, it will continue to grow. Great companies like Target/Costco, Starbucks, and Toys R Us are all examples of companies that treat their full and part time work force well. No one is forced to work at Wal-Mart. Nor are we forced to suppor them by shopping there.

Nice to admit that coverage was expensive for low income families... when ALL the Walmart workers I have seen qualify for Food Stamps and such... gimme a break!!! A company the size of Walmart could offer a much more decent Insurance rate/coverage than what is here...

This is just plain DISGUSTING!!!! Even worse than I thought...

Thanks for sharing this, Smart Chick!!!

Prince,
You don't know how lucky you were. At least three wal mart stores have been fined and otherwise penalized for coming to low tier workers at the end of 31 hours and telling them to clock out and then get back to work.
