Hideous!

Lucille Ball fans want ‘frightening’ statue in star’s hometown removed

They don’t love this Lucy. Locals are not happy with this statue of Lucille Ball in Celoron, N.Y.

Lucille Ball’s hometown, just outside Jamestown in western New York, erected a life-size statue to honor the beloved actress — but now it has some explaining to do.

Many locals take issue with the sculptor’s unflattering depiction of the “I Love Lucy” star.

A self-described “big fan of Lucy’s” from Jamestown thinks the statue needs to be replaced with one befitting the comedy legend.

“Lucille Ball was not only an amazing comedienne, but she was a stunning beauty. Her sense of humor only made her more beautiful,” he said in an interview with Yahoo News. “This statue looks nothing like the beautiful Lucy we all know. If for no other reason than that... the statue should go.”

The Jamestown man, who wishes to remain anonymous, started a Facebook page titled We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue.

“I don’t think this can be repaired,” he said. “Take a look at the beautiful statues Nick at Nite created for ‘Bewitched’ and ‘The Honeymooners’ and Bob Newhart… it needs to be something more like those.”

The group organizer says that he does not want to disparage artist Dave Poulin at all. In fact, he said, the artist has other works that are quite good — he just missed the mark this time.

In this undated image provided by CBS, comedian-actress Lucille Ball and her husband, musician-actor Desi Arnaz, …

“I think it looks like a monster. That is just my opinion,” he said. “When you see it at night, it is frightening.”

The Jamestown area is immensely proud of the classic television icon. Jamestown is home to the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum & Center for Comedy, which hosts an annual comedy festival the first week of August. Jerry Seinfeld will be headlining this year.

Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost  told the Jamestown Post-Journal that it would cost a lot of money — between $8,000 and $10,000 — to have the original artist recast the statue, which was unveiled in 2009.

Schrecengost told the newspaper that he has no interest in using taxpayer dollars to fix it. Instead, a fund has been set up to raise the money, according to the daily newspaper.

The artist did not reply to Yahoo News’ request for comment.

Talk about pathetic....can someone cut the bolts or however it is attached, maybe some of those thugs that steal wire from houses under construction, Home Depot etc. could make it disappear - it probably has scrap value.  Note to board be sure it is insured!!  Note #2 to board please go out for cocktails after your meetings instead of before....

You make too much sense my friend. I'm not even sure you have to cut off the entire head. Of course, what do I know? I'm not a gifted artist like the dude who built the thing.

Thanks for the info on the past history RT. I have to agree. Why accept it when it doesn't even look like her. Maybe the sun was so bright in the park that day that the village officials were blinded when the statue was put up! Now the Mayor wants to fix it with a grant but he doesn't want the taxpayers to pay for it. News flash Mr. Mayor where do you think the money for government grants come from. It comes from the TAXPAYERS!!!! Figtree I don't know if the board even knows the Ten Commandments but their should be a new commandment just for this board "thou shall not blame someone else for your mistakes"!

it became clear that the village officials accepted this statue and at no time did they question it. Apparently they never checked on what it looked like as it was being made. The July 15th article shows that they had time to check before it was delivered. What is truly sad is that they accepted it with such fanfare and now are attacking the sculptor. If they did not like the statue why did they accept it? I agree with the people that want it fixed because it does not look anything like Lucy but the fact that it is in the park is on the village officials. I know that you should not speak ill of the dead but this is all on Jack Keeney, Scott Schrecengost, Norm Mattison, **** Kogut and Robin Young for accepting it in the first place. Now Mayor Schrecengost makes the statement that the sculptor should "stand behind his work enough to step up and fix it for free". Maybe the village officials who accepted it in the first place should admit their mistake and pay to have it fixed t

When I first read carlaw"s comment I agreed until I looked at previous articles about this. On 8/8/09 there was an Post Journal article called "Start Of Something Big". In the article Jetta Wilson said that she was "extremely pleased" and "it's just perfect" in talking about the statue. You should know that Mrs. Wilson was the Deputy Clerk of Celoron then and I believe she still is. In another article that same day titled "Move To Celoron Brings Festival Full Circle" the late Mayor Jack Keeney said "It's absolutely special. It's so great to have a statue of Lucy here". He also said that having the statue will "certainly bring a lot of recognition" to the village. In a 7/15/09 article titled Celoron Family Donates Lucy Statue" Mayor Keeney said "I don't have the words to thank you enough for the village". Trustee Norm Mattison said of the statue "It's a wonderful gift". After reading these article

Why would you want the same sculptor to have anything to do with this project. He didn't even come close. If he could fix it, he would have long ago since it is an embarrassment in it's present state.

The building, itself, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a masterpiece,.  The museum building is worth a look, if not its contents. One takes an elevator to the top and walk a winding way down to view the exhibits.

At the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh there is a canvas painted all white.  Just white.  It is untitled, but I like to call it "A Study in White", and look forward to the artist's next painting, "A Study in Blue".  Someone took a white canvas, painted it white, and sold it as "art" to a reputable museum that should know better.

I wonder if the roof on the Athens house leaks like all the flat roofs on all of Wright's "usonian" style houses.
