I've been reading about Gov Bentley calling for a special session to have a vote on a lottery to mainly help Alabama's general fund.  Alabama has an income tax, but instead of increasing tax on those who have the ability to pay more, he wants a lottery to help the poor pay more.  My advice is, from someone who lives in a state without an income tax, vote it down so the Alabama money spent in Tennessee on the lottery will keep helping my grandkids pay for college.                                                                                                                                      Also, don't believe the property tax stories. I have a plot of land in Alabama that appraises at $15,000, I can't sell it for $10,000 and I pay $164 property tax to Alabama. Tennessee rates are not that high. BTW, this land is 1/2 mile from the school.

But the poor will save on gas money by not having to drive to the state lines plus,  I don't believe the poor are required to buy lottery tickets and should know better.  I'm not poor and occasionally will buy one just for entertainment and don't expect to win.

"Also, don't believe the property tax stories. I have a plot of land in Alabama that appraises at $15,000, I can't sell it for $10,000 and I pay $164 property tax to Alabama. Tennessee rates are not that high. BTW, this land is 1/2 mile from the school."

Believe it or not, Alabama has more than one school.  I happen to know this because I've attended five of them.

Alabama state income tax goes towards the education budget and not the general fund which is in the most trouble. I really don't care if we get a lottery or not; it's a voluntary tax. I don't think it will help in the long run because it will extract money from people on the goobermint teat who can't afford to play which will cause them to demand more goobermint services. It will enrich the contractors operating the system though.

Why do you care what Alabama does?      Gifted, if you will read the post, the                                                                                      answer will appear to you

I read it jt, and she asked what I always asked, you live in TN what does anything that goes on in Alabama have to do with you? Tend to TN business. Owning a "plot" of land doesn't give you the right to stick your nose in.

Read it, question still stands.

When I drive to town, I almost always turn south into Alabama, I always use Alabama doctors and hospitals, while I worked, I paid Alabama nonresident tax for about 40 years. Odds and ends of stuff like that. From the way your elected people are tending to Alabama business, somebody needs to tend to Alabama business. Y'all keep reelecting the same incompetent ones.

Our elected people and the rest of us must be doing something right, you can't stay away. Why don't you use TN doctors and hospitals? Again, Alabama must be doing something that suits your nosey ***. Typical demoslop, griping about people that help you. Alabama's business is just that, Alabama's business. Just who do you pay taxes to on that plot of land you have? Again, it would keep you busy if you tended to TN business. We go to TN all the time, but that doesn't give me the right to stick my nose into their politics and I don't use their doctors and hospitals.

No, satire is a planet between Mars and Uranalus...

Sorry, satire is a half man/half goat, playing a Pan flute while looking for nekkid women.

I had "herd" that those goat herders got pretty lonely.

The Tennessee Hope (lotto) Scholarship does not come close to covering the total cost of college and it's requirements would leave most ineligible.  As I've shown in the past, the lotto money for college has become more of a stipend that will only decrease further as time goes on.   Huge waste of money in my opinion.

A person who spends $20/week on lotto tickets could invest that money into a Coverdell ESA, after 18 years they would have much more money than what the state would pay thru HOPE and they would not be subject to the eligibility requirements.  Plus, they can go to ANY school they choose.  Unfortunately this takes personal discipline, which automatically excludes the those who think like JT, and that's a lot of people.

It pays a lot more than nothing. The lottery was started to pay for college only. Sometime later, looking at the unlimited pile of money accumulating, some of it got "borrowed, took, or stole" to fund some preschool stuff. The pols couldn't understand why the pile was getting smaller.  Then they made some cuts to the college payments.

If you don't meet the state's criteria, then that is what you get, "nothing".  I just calculated the cost of one semester at UNA with fees to be over $5200 for 16 hours credit.  The Hope Scholarship if in Alabama won't pay half of that figure, provided you even qualify.

You answered the million dollar question as to why these programs aren't worth a hoot.  It's controlled by politicians who have no vision beyond the time it takes them to get elected.

If you think handing over your money to politicians to invest for your child's future is a good idea, then I've got some beachfront property in Arizona I'd like you to invest in.

How much is that land?  I don't have to buy the lottery tickets, the Alabama folks will do it for me, that is until they have a lottery. Looks like that's still several months in the future.

JT makes a good point.  How much $$ does TN invest to make sure AL doesn't have a lottery?  Mississippi /  Tunica advertises heavily in AL.  What about GA?  Heck the whole southeast is hoping AL remains lottery / casino free.

And they call this a lottery for education.  LOL!

Reminds me of the bootleggers who used to contribute to preachers to preach on the evils of alcohol, when the wet/dry votes came up.

People have the right to throw their own money away, I've got no problem with that.  However, pitching the lotto as a cure-all for state money problems is akin to p1ssing in my ear and telling me it's raining.

This Alabamian has not contributed 1 red penny to your HOPE (Hop On Poverty Express) Plan.  If the lottery was a great investment, then I'm sure you're cashing in your retirement to buy those tickets and scratch off's, lol.

If they would just be honest and tell you up front that they are just taking your money with no expectations of ever getting a return and then plan to squander it with high overhead operating cost,  no problem here.

BTW, just drop off a big bag of cash under the 1982 Ford Fiesta parked at the Florence Walmart and I'll make sure you get your deed to that property.

Yep, he's going to take a "pass" on answering that one. As usual he only asks questions over and over, and never answers them.

I pay at the Lauderdale COUNTY Courthouse. Note the name Lauderdale county? That's a good hint. Hendrix is the elected official that manages the property tax office in the Lauderdale COUNTY Courthouse. I don't really think you are that dumb and dense, but it's the only way that, in your mind, you can make me look bad.

You pay at the courthouse. Which one gets your tax money, county or state or both, or Hendrix that you keep insisting on naming? I don't have to make you look bad, you do that on your own. I just point it out.

I keep trying to tell you the county property tax office at the county court house is who I pay. I don't know or care where it goes. If I don't pay it, the property will be sold for back taxes.

And there you have it. You don't know or care. OK, calling BS on your story of owning property in Alabama.
