K-Mart and Sears were fairly obvious.  Best Buy's product mix may be found at a number of stores, now.  The chain is on a list for declining sales.  Ruby Tuesday, one of my favorites, just had too many competitors in the area for the price range.

Maybe, but in my opinion they closed the wrong one, I think Florence was by far their best location in this area but it couldn't come close to competing with Sam's Grille.

I've heard from two Best Buy workers that had comments about the pending store closure and both said that the Florence Best Buy was among the top 100 Best Buys' in the nation for sales so the reason for the closure may remain a mystery however both also indicated that the landlord for the building also was raising the rent/lease fee knowing that sales was up thinking that they could make more money and that Best Buy corporate made a business decision not to play ball so chose to close the store rather than agree to pay what he wanted.

I still say it will likely be a mystery and maybe we'll never know.

I was told by someone who works there that the landlord DOUBLED the rent when the lease was up. The plans are for a Burlington Coat Factory Outlet to take up residence there. The landlord is stupid, plain and simple. BCF will not survive there, and an outlet store will not be able to afford double rent payments either. Do these people not realize it is better to have it occupied than to run businesses away? I sincerely hope the city and county never allow landlords like this any type of incentive to build again.

This is one area where local Government should be stepping up and taking a stand and trying to help.  The Mall is going to be losing one of the major anchor stores, in Sears, so you know that's got to hurt.  I don't know for sure but I've also heard that the increase in rent/lease charges is the main reason that Morrison's Cafeteria decided to leave the mall and yes it seems that many people make the same mistake or error.  Consider the building where Homeside restaurant was located off Cloverdale Road  the building had the restaurant in the rear and a cowboy type business in the front and now both are gone and from what I hear account of the owner of the building wanting to increase their rent by so much.

Another example was, from what I hear, is where Monkeying Around was located in the old Winn Dixie shopping center.  The people there wanted to maintain a store there but the owner raised the rent too high for them to stay and now I see some gym type outfit is coming in.   There's not too good of a history with gym type places it also seems.

As for Best Buy I doubt that they could take over a store the size that Sear's had because the rent there would be much higher also but I hope that they would not completely leave the area.  There is also going to be (it seems) a retail location adjacent to the new Academy Sports building.  I suppose Business owners or landlords do have their right to charge what they want given the market but if their poor decisions end up taking them down then I'm totally against anyone in City Government bailing them out with taxpayer money which is what I bet a lot of them bank on.

I hate to see Best Buy go out and for the reason that it seems they are leaving for but you can't blame Best Buy if that's the reason for they are also making business decisions for their own good.

I visited the mall yesterday. The place looked empty, it seems the new owners have run off business there.

I don't know what's going on with the new Mall owners.  I knew the old Mall manager and found out that he had been let go from his wife so as for what's going on I don't know anymore.  I know it sounds like a broken record but I'll say again that often the poorest of management decisions wreck a business which is aptly demonstrated by IHOP's choice of opening management when they opened the IHOP in Florence.   Could be location also had a part to play in it but every time I pass the IHOP in Decatur it seems it's packed out with business and the one here closed up so fast I don't think they ever gave it a chance to succeed.

I still don't know if the local IHOP was a franchise or corporate store.  I suppose now that location is destined to always be some kind of automotive dealership.

Well you know who the landlord is.

Even if it's not a landlord conspiracy, it's not surprising. Best Buy has a mediocre selection, crappy prices unless they're having a clearance sale, and terrible support & service. The worst customer service I've ever experienced has been from Best Buy stores.
Besides, it's not like anyone in this area would buy from them when they could get their movies/electronics from Amazon or Wal-Mart.  I mean Wal-Mart's sales are strong enough to support three stores in this one little podunk town because most people don't shop anywhere else. Or in many cases, CAN'T shop anywhere else. They will just continue growing and eating everyone's lunch until there's nothing left but them.
Anyone know what's going in next to Target? Is it the rumored PetSmart? Mark my words, next we're going to see a showdown between the sporting goods stores (Hibbetts, ****s, and Sports Authority) and between the pet stores. (Petco, Petsmart, and Pet Depot) The local ecosystem can't support so many big chain stores. Someone's gotta go, and it's probably gonna be the smaller, local stores first.

The store going in beside ****'s is a newer outlet type of store, called Field and Stream, which is a ****'s Superstore so to speak. They have one in Mobile. My guess is that they plan to do this to survive Gander Mountain and Academy competition. I still think losing Best Buy will be detrimental to the area. There are some things there you cannot get at Walmart or Target, and it is nice to have a little bit of a higher quality selection.
